Featured March 2016 Prius daily sales rate down 30% from 2015

I've also been saying that RAV4 explains part of Prius sales.
Assuming Gen4 sales have not yet reached full force with new vehicles still getting into smaller dealers, Toyota potentially reaches 80% of hybrid sales this year or next.
I hope Toyota keeps the new v's coming I can see renewed interest in v as it potentially fills a need for existing Gen2/3 owners looking to keep the space that the streamlined Gen4 more sedan-like design tends to downplay.

 

Possibly - any guess on when that will no longer be an issue? In theory - a manufacturer is supposed to be able to quasi-predict demand. Not that it's always right . . . . acres & acres of Hummers languishing unsold in hidden back lots for years comes to mind.

i doubt we'll ever know if the new styling has positively, or negatively affected sales.

but i think it's time to assess hybrids as a totality of a manufacturer, not each individual model.

 

Exactly! The Prius isn't for everyone. For example, my wife's health led me to look at a Ford transit a year ago because of the easier wheel chair access. Fortunately, she got better and wheel chair access is no longer a hard requirement. But I am still interested in a mini-van hybrid.

Looks like the 2016 Prius have put a positive slope on sales. The RAV-4 hybrid is doing pretty good too.

Come on we killed all your points in this thread. Sales price has nothing to do with supply. I would agree Tesla has support/fans/investors, but GM? Toyota has no interest in selling Li batts at a steep loss, GM might have interest in that. I would agree mega-subsidies for Plug-ins hurt hybrids sales, but within the hybrid sales, Toyota and Prius are King.

 

gas prices aren't the problem. repeat until convinced.

That seems like a problem doesn't it? Its April 2016, all the gen III's should be gone and the gen IVs should be filling lots. For whatever reason, toyota produced too many gen IIIs and is slow on the gen IVs. We can't tell how well the gen IV is doing until it has inventory, but I get these emails from dealers trying to sell me a gen 3.

There is crazy interest in the model 3. The bolt? GM expects to sell about 30,000/year when they ramp up. That is great compared to the leaf, but not much compared to prii. People are going to wait for that model 3. It just sounds like a better value, and survey's say people want bigger and nicer, which the model 3 promises. The bolt still didn't get the message that rules for plug-ins are different. Still GM is going to gain electrified market share, and the volt is the best selling plug-in in the US over all times. The model S looks like it will easily outsell the bolt in 2016.

Gas prices are a problem for the prius, a car that has sold because of low gas use. The gen IV improved drivablity, but maybe not enough for low gas prices.

Bolt is killing leaf sales ;-) I doubt it is hurting prius liftback sales.

 

Current inventories will reflect April sales, not those of the past. The supply was limited until just recently.

That's called drawing a conclusion based upon anecdotal evidence. Macro economics tell us it is reasonable to have expectation of a demand plateau until the rest of the competition joins in. Without that variety and endorsement of support, sales won't grow much.

We are only seeing that joining now. Notice how there are slim to none for selection available from some automakers?

Is it bad that GM has a 230 mile / charge EV for $37k? Uh, no.

btw, Bolt is on the cover of MotorTrend with Model S with comparo test. MT likes the Bolt.
