Hi all! Looking for help or suggestions!

I was driving my 2008 prius this morning to work. It started fine, and I drove it for about 10 mins. Stopped at my local convenience store to grab some breakfast and coffee. Got back in the car, started it, and I got the red triangle Master Warning light, the VSC light, and the check engine light all came on. I only had about 10 miles to go to work, so I tried to make it to work. Made it about 3 miles when I lost all acceleration and had to pull off to the side. I put into reverse and backed up a bit to give the the tow truck a little more room, but I only backed up a bit before the engine shut off completely, and now the car won't shift into drive or reverse, only neutral.

Unfortunately, since it's sunday, I haven't been able to get any codes. I did check the battery display, and I only had one bar. That's all the info I have at the moment. Any suggestions or ideas that anyone has would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

    Some questions:

    • How old is the 12 v battery?
    • How much gas is in your Prius?
    • Where will you have the Prius towed to?
    • Do they have Techstream?
    • Have you had any other recent issues?
    Keep us posted (y).

    1. I'll be honest, I'll not entirely sure how old the 12 v battery is. I bought the car from my parents, who bought it from my great Aunt. I'm guessing it would be at least 4 years old, as my parents drive it for 2 years, I've driven it for a year, and my aunt couldn't remember any major repairs in the last year before she sold it.

    2. I only had about 1 bar left on my gas gage.

    3. I had it towed to Sandman brothers in Shelbyville, IN. They aren't a Toyota dealer, but they were the closest place I knew of.

    4. I'm not sure about tech stream, since I haven't been able to contact them, as they're closed today.

    5. No other major issues recently. I was rear ended about a month and a half ago, but Beck Toyota in Greenwood looked at afterward and said they didn't have any concerns.

I bet you can’t say that you won’t have rain for many months though;).

Just hoping for less fires this year (y).

One option that is about an hour away from you is Auto Be Yours in Seymour, IN:).

If you had 1 bar of gas left, you’ve more than likely depleted your hybrid battery and now will need specialized equipment to bring the battery back up, if not already weakened it:(.

Steve is a Prius enthusiast and has everything you’ll need for a Gen2 :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

This can happen even if the car hadn't given me a low a fuel warning? And I always fill up when there are 2-3 bars left on the gas gauge. Is that a practice I should change?

With the bladder gas tank in the Gen2, you need to be mindful;).

Filling can be a challenge if the bladder collapses which can lead to inaccuracy in other facets:(.

One of the quirks of the Gen2 .

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

    Update:

Got my car back from Beck Toyota in Greenwood Indiana. After testing the Hybrid batter and finding that it was ok, They determined the problem was with the auxiliary battery. It was only reading 2 volts when they got it. They replaced it and it's been fine so far. Only problem is now that for some reason, I can't get to my CD player when switching through the sound modes. Calling them today to check in on that. Lol. Thanks for everyone's help on this.
