(I did scan this sub-forum but quit after 7 pages.......)
I saw only one referece to EV cutting off at 10 mph if the engine wasn't fully warm.

Mine won't DO EV mode at all if the engine is cold.......which makes it pretty much useless for moving the car out of the garage or moving down the street a few parking places.......but that is a beef with Toyota about their design parameters.

The real question is: It seems that mine will NEVER go over 10 MPH in EV mode, warm or cold.
That makes the feature almost TOTALLY USELESS.

Is that another bonehead design glitch or is something not quite right with my car.......or am I doing something wrong ???

It depends on the SOC (State of Charge) of the HV traction battery as well.

If the traction battery is low, then the car will run the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to charge the battery, regardless of whether the car is warm or cold.

It will go up to 46mph in EV mode, that is driving with the ICE off, all electric.
The pushbutton EV mode is just for moving in/out of garage, or in a parking lot, max is 10 or 11mph.

Do you have an engine monitor (ScanGauge or equivalent) to check coolant temperatures? If so, what temperatures are you seeing?

For the GenIII Liftback in the U.S. market, EV is not available when the coolant is below 68F (20C). Between 68F and something fairly warm (132F??), max EV speed is 10 mph. Above that higher temperature, max EV speed rises to 25 mph. Outside North America, these temperature thresholds are different. I don't know if 'c' owners have found different temperature thresholds.

And as others have pointed out, there are additional restrictions. Once these are understood, I have found EV useful. But due to my local climate, which falls below 68F all but a handful of nights per year, EV is rarely available first thing in the morning. Owners living in warmer climates get more use of it.

Yes but that is just "normal" operation of the hybrid parameters.

What I am talking about is pushing the button and (supposedly) forcing it into EV operation.

Since it will "idle" at 5 MPH on electric only, having the manually selected EV mode purposely
cut off at 10 MPH is just plain stupid and makes the button worthless.

Come to think of it, having the ICE come on just to warm up before you have moved at least a couple of hundred feet is pretty stupid too.

    Sure, doesn't everybody ?
    Sorry, no I don't.

Maybe I should have specified "pushing the EV button".

If you just let the hybrid logic do it's thing, you probably end up in an EV mode anyway slightly more than 50% of the time when you want it......and without the stupid restrictions.

I am talking about the EV button, while 'X_HCH2' was not.

Many of us do have such monitors, and these have been very helpful in figuring out how to get the most out of our cars. And how to make reasonable use of the things you claimed in the OP to be totally useless.

    Do you have a "C" ??
If so, I would like to know more about getting it above 10 MPH with the EV button pushed.
If not, I suspect that your model works differently.
Others have said that the C won't do it.

Are you asking if it's normal for it to kick you out of EV mode if you go over 10 mph? Yes, that is normal. Check your manual. That's all the EV button has to offer. Yes, it is practically useless, except in rare occasions.

If the car is already warmed up and goes into EV on its own (without the button), it will stay in EV at higher speeds. But, as you've pointed out, that is not useful if you aren't moving very far. Sometimes you just have to waste a little gas.

Yes. My EV Button mode was a disappointment to me at first too, but now I have figured out how to use it. Correct, it will not work when the car is cold, or battery is low. If the car is warm, it will go only 10 mph. If the car is hot, it will go up to 25 mph in EV Button mode. I find when I take trips downtown, it goes into EV mode after my interstate drive and will stay in EV Button mode while I drive around below 25 mph, which is often my entire trip downtown. Sometimes I don't use my Engine until I return to the Interstate to go back home.

Maybe I gave up too quickly; more testing is in order.
A small peeve is that without a temp. gauge, it's hard to tell the difference
between a "warm" engine and a "hot" one.

The EV button works like this:

EV button - cold - 10 mph max
EV button - car warmed up - 25 mph

Is that documented somewhere.......so that I can show my dealer if mine doesn't work that way ???
I haven't had a chance to test it "HOT" yet.

I believe it's in the owners manual. But I'd be willing to bet it works. Drive 10 miles and find a parking lot to test.

That is for you warm climate folks. Those of us in colder climates have a third condition on the coldest side: "EV not available".

And I believe that it is NOT.....at least the manuals for '13.
I can't be positive as I have not read every single page.......but I have read most of it.

Once the car warms up it will still work. Even on warm days if I don't hit the button before the engine turns on I can't get EV until a few miles.

I don't remember where then, but I read those figures in a manual put out by Toyota.

Up until 10 mph on warmer days. If it's below 60 degrees it won't work for me.
