Yes- I love to see others doing this. I think you are not alone in your past skepticism. I never expected more than 50 MPG but I almost always beat the EPA ratings.

My current tank is at 59.7 MPG with 394 miles on the tank so far I just dropped to four bars. If nothing happens to drop this average I'll go over 700 miles again on this tank. I think there are lots of little things that we are doing to bring the mileage up from the low 50s. My wife drives hers like a normal car and only gets 51 MPG on a commute that is almost exactly like mine. I think my recent air filter change at 31k helped a little, even though it didn't look terribly dirty. I was only getting around 58 MPG before the filter change. Now I'm back up to where I was last year.

I think that these mid 80 temps are helping some even though I have to use a little AC. Later when they climb to the high 90s and low 100s I will lose a little mileage.

The bottom line for me: Don't push the gas pedal unless absolutelly necessary - and - and this is important - the same applies to the brakes.

Coast whenever you can. Yes, it does not come naturally at first, for that is not the way we drove all these years, but eventually it becomes a natural style.

Interestingly, even when applying this new style, I'm by no means a menace to other traffic, quite opposite - I accelerate quite briskly (I figured that it is actually better to get up to desired cruising speed quickly than accelerate slowly as recommended by Toyota manual) and I do pass slow cars frequently.

As per the AC - I didn't get much chance to use it yet, but when I did I noticed that the ECU doesn't start if it runs even full blast. So the only thing that could bring the MPG down is the increased battery discharge, but unless you sit idle in traffic for 2/3s of the commute, the impact on MPG should still be barely noticeable, no?

Please correct me if I'm missing something.

Tank # 3 and #4. Trip around Lake Michigan, scenic route.

    5/9: Tank #3: 514 miles; 9.58 gal; MPG = 53.65; MFD = 51.9

    5/11:Tank #4; 520 miles; 9.80 gal, MPG = 53.06; MFD = 53.7

    AVG #3 + #4 = 53.35 mpg!!!

    Total miles = 1705 at tank #4

    Happy new owner.....fer shur!

    Hello All!

New to this site. Stats from last week:

    Miles: 489

    Car Computer: 55.8 mpg

    Calculated: 59.7 mpg

    Current Tank (Computer): 54mpg.

My strategy: Rush Hour--Goooood! Accelerate smartly (not too aggressively) to cruise speed (between 40's-50's) then lift completely off, and then immediately back on pedal to maintain cruise. Let mother nature help.

    5/13/2005 23973 475 50.5 48.9

    5/26/2005 25462 558 54.9 52.4

This are the fillups in May. The increase on May 23 and 26 reflects 5 days of round-trip from Oxnard to Anaheim, 90 miles in rush hour traffic. The fuel economy was improved over highway traffic at the speed limit of 65 mpg. One trip from Oxnard to Anaheim, with some slow traffic, was 57.0 mpg over 90 miles.

My city driving is usually in the mid 40's because of the traffic lights and typically short trips.

For reference, my lifetime MPG is 48.5, and I've saved at least $487.31 over my previous vehicle (95 Ford Escort got 34 mpg overall.)

Here comes June. The temperature spreads are already narrowing rapidly, and the A/C is already becoming a daily companion. I have the uneasy feeling that this is gonna be a nasty summer this year. :(

    Re: May 2005 Averages

I now have just under 2000 miles on my one month old 2005 Prius. Vast majority of those miles have been highway. This last tank was

    Tank miles- 342
    Gallons for fillup- 5.7 (that's 60 mpg)
    computer mpg was 53.8

Even allowing for a difference in fuel pump shutoff. I am happy as a clam about getting over 50.

I live in a small town and when I do city driving, I don't get much of a warm-up and my city has been in the high 40's.

This is S/W Ohio and we are just getting into summer.

My new Prius finally got low enough on fuel to rationalize a fill up. ;) And just in time for May!
403 miles, 8.826 gallons, 45.7 MPG (Computer had me at 43.1). For the first time in a long time I filled up a "nearly empty" car for under $20!

How much does AC affect your MPG?
I bought my car in the last week of April.

Tank 1: Calc 43 mpg, MFD 45 mpg
Tank 2: Calc 40 mpg, MFD 44 mpg
Tank 3: Calc 53 mpg, MFD 47 mpg
Tank 4: Calc 41 mpg, MFD 45 mpg

Why such a large discrepancy? Also, I have been driving my car very passively (coasting when possible, feathering, etc.) but the mpg have varied so much. Any explanation?

The weather has slowly become hotter. On Tank 4, I was constantly in the upper 90's.

When you say the Prius likes warmer weather, are you referring to moderate, 70-80's, because this HOT weather in Texas is draining my battery so fast!

It will if you are stuck in traffic with the AC running. If you are able to keep moving, it is a minor effect and the heat helps the engine to run more efficiently.

In the pictures for my record tanks the temperature on the screen was 97 degrees both times.

I set the AC just cool enough to blow cool air. That is between 78 and 81 degrees. The hotter it is the warmer I set it and I recirculate the air. I have the huper optik 30 window tint and it helps alot. I just tinted my wifes at lunch today and she called to say that it makes a big difference. I've had it in mine for a year now. She's getting 56 on this tank and I'm getting 60.5.

Stick around and you can learn all the little tricks. Break-in helps some too but hers only has about 3000 miles on it.

That would be "Price per *gallon*", not litre.

I shamelessly lifted Tideland's format from a previous post, but obviously didn't cover my tracks very well!

    Re: May 2005 Averages

This was a record month for me (my 19th month of ownership).

I finished the month with a 57.5 mpg with 1446 miles (25.1 gallons). Thanks to nice weather for certain!

LMPG (click below if you wanna see all my records) is up to 51.4 (GreenHybrid calculated to 51.5, but it doesn't count my first 150 miles or so) also a record high for me. Seems unlikely I'll ever drop below 51mpg again (lifetime). I'm hoping to push past the 52mpg mark by the end of summer, but I don't know that I'll be able to sustain that through winter.

    Re: May 2005 Averages

This was a May 31 fillup. It took me a while to get the receipt from my wife, especially because she thinks I'm to blame for the bad mileage. And she's probably right, even when she's not watching me type! (Hi honey.)

    Tank Miles: 299.1
    Total Miles: 7458
    Tank MPG: 35.7 (ouch again!)
    Lifetime MPG: 44.9
    Avg Temp: 60s
    Price of Tank: $18.26
    Price per Gal: $2.18

Apparently I didn't get the car full enough last time, and assumed my low number of gallons produced great mileage the tank before. Overall, it's not bad (as I learned on the next fillup June 13th).

    Re: May 2005 Averages

Just broke the 3500 mile barrier on my Prius. Average mileage has been right at 50 MPG so far. I am a bit disappointed in the "blinking" scale gas gauge accuracy as often I have only been able to put in ~9 gallons at that stage of "empty". I am one of those guys who likes to drive it down to fumes before I fill up. In everyone's experience, how far can you go in the "blinking single bar" left on the gauge?

There are several current threads that are discussing this. I have just a hair under three gallons when it starts blinking. Others have reported running out after just 35 miles or so. The most I've ever gone on the flashing bar is 141 miles. That tank was a total of 818 miles at 65.1 MPG. Welcome to Priuschat.
