    The toe in is the relationship of the wheel (and tire) so that it is pointed in the direction that the car is moving (parallel to the centerline of the car). The wheels are either toed in (slightly closer at the front compared to the rear), toed out (slighly closer at the rear) or zero (the same distance front and rear).

    The car manufacturer recommends the toe in settings for both the front and rear. In the case of the Gen2 Prius, the nominal settings are (0° +/- 0.2°) toe for the front wheels and (0.30° +/- 0.25°) for the rear wheels. Ideally they should be toed in the same amount on both sides (i.e. each rear wheel should be 0.15° compared to the centerline of the car).

    Yes, to adjust rear toe in, you must shim the rear hub. I installed a shim between the backing plate and the axle beam to reduce the toe at the right rear wheel.

    BTW the Toyota dealer will refuse to install shims, as the Toyota repair manual indicates that new suspension parts should be installed if rear wheel alignment is incorrect. So if this is the problem you'll need to find a specialty alignment shop willing to install shims.
