Link to a story about Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in Europe.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Surpasses 50,000 Units Sold in UK

My daughter, who lives in Florida, had an Outlander and although it was kind of dated mechanically, it was a decent car. The biggest problem was that she bought a red one and the sun really does a number on red vehicles in Florida.

I guess the market for this type vehicle is better in Europe because of regulations.

They sell them here and a dealer near me has 3. They are asking $36k for them. FuelEconomy.gov lists them at 75 mpge for the first 22 miles and then 25 mpg after so not so great after the battery is depleted but it might not be bad for a grocery getter. They might be the least advertised PHEV in the country.

I read a road-test on one just in the last couple of weeks - on the new version with the Atkinson ICE, and it seemed to have quite good fuel economy in Hybrid mode - much better than roadtests of the old engine.

Here in Australia it's logical opponent is the RAV4 Hybrid - which achieved a little better fuel economy, a significantly lower price, and the RAV4 is a better drive from all reports - oh, and no spare tyre.

Still - a PHEV might suit some people better than a RAV4, with cheap power readily accessible, and short commutes.

My daughter gets more winter than most of the US, (it snowed yesterday) and will get a AWD PHEV SUV when her 2001 Subaru Forester dies. Right now that looks like the Outlander, until a RAV4 Prime exists.

It is the only PHEV with DCFC (CCS IIRC).

It's selling well in Canada and it's the top selling PHEV (although the Prime and Volt are close but of course the Volt won't catch up)

Another comparison today - this time in urban use, Plugged in for part of the journeys, then to hybrid for the rest. The RAV4 was so close to the combined PHEV - the RAV4 won in most regards - including price, warranty and a better drive.

This is the new(ish) Australian version of the PHEV - someone pointed out that you've still got the old ICE in the US PHEV - not sure if that's correct?

Very surprising results on FE in that video.
Outlander 54km AER, in a 70km loop home-work, gets the same as the RAV4?
    Can't imagine how.

There was a report I can't find a couple of years ago, I think UK - they said that when the PHEV ran out of battery, running as a hybrid was quite poor - for a hybrid. FUELLY results for RAV4 Hybrid - and PHEV are sort-of similar - though quite different, the PHEV marginally better and more lower outliers. And for $3000 more base price - I can't see the value. Maybe the 2020 model with Atkinson engine might show more improvement.

    RAV4 - 2019 in FUELLY

PHEV 2018 (not many cars in other years) - in FUELLY

    upload_2020-4-3_23-25-12.png

The other thing to consider - if you're driving a pattern where you can plug and charge regularly - you'll get better value from the PHEV - but if you do long distances, the RAV4 will probably be a better proposition.

By the time people are buying vehicles again the escape phev will be out, and the Rav4 prime will be out I hope within the next year.
Specs Check: 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime vs. 2020 Ford Escape PHEV - MotorTrend

In markets where both are available a year from now, both appear on paper better than the outlander phev depending on desires. We still don't know pricing but given the ford fusion energi and prius prime both should be reliable vehicles. Rav4 prime looks much better but it all depends on how toyota executes.

The updated Outlander PHEV with more efficient engine came out last year.

Looks like Australia is still getting the old 2.0L engine that the US gets.

That's correct. We still have the old engine (and presumably the old electric motors and batteries). Or in other words, we never got the midlife update for the powertrain.

Did you just get it for 2020, or for 2019?

That would make it a 2020 model year in the US. Seems Australia got it about a year after its introduction.
