    That's weird - if the compliance or build date is 2019, it's a 2019 model here. WYSIWYG.

    Yeah, the model year can be different than the build date, but that's how it's been for my life. It does have an advantage in differentiating between redesigns, refreshes, or simple feature changes of a car. If someone told you they got a 2019 Outlander PHEV, you'd have to ask them if it was the one with the new engine and battery. With the US system, you would know they didn't, because they would have said they got a 2020 one. Though you might have other terminology that does the same thing.

    Mitsu brought it on their self -
    why should U.S. buyers who got treated like the red headed step child (Outlander plug-in delivered for many years, but not for the U.S.) suddenly flock to where they've never been invited. I fear a Toyota EV may get treated the same way - if & when it ever comes to a U.S. market.

    Without the Mirage giving them a line until the new SUV craze arrived, Mitsubishi would have gone the way of Suzuki here. The Outlander PHEV arriving sooner would not have sold in enough numbers to help with that, and any that came here, were ones not printing them money in other markets.

    Mitsubishi is a very minor player in the US car market. I think Tesla sold more Model 3s here than they sold cars. The PHEV wasn't going to have much impact on our plug in adoption rate.
