So many signs are pointing to an S and X refresh sometime in the next few months, or half a year at the maximum. Does anyone have any speculation, hopes, or dreams about what changes they might make?

    Here are mine:
    - 2170 cell packs therefore taking full advantage of Supercharger V3 yumminess
    - Model-3-like interior, including vents and landscape screen (probably 17 inch though)
    - track mode in performance versions
    - 120+ kWh packs, maybe even a 400 mile range Model S
    - something new, exciting, and unexpected

I thought they were doing "continuous release" types of refreshes where the newer vehicles had improvements over the first ones produced instead of really doing "model years".

i'd like to see a new s body style, it's starting to look dated. especially next to a 3.

That's only for small refreshes and improvements. I could be wrong, but most people anticipate some big refresh.

I would agree that it probably should be made to make a little bit more futuristic again. So many companies have borrowed from Tesla's styling that it doesn't stand out as much now. Hopefully they don't go too drastic though.

agreed. even some tweaks to the front and rear ends, etc. would be nice.

i have to wonder what sales will do, seeing that some s buyers just didn't want to wait for the 3, but wanted the 3 price.

I think 2 things could drive sales of the S again.
    1. Make it truly much better than the 3. Currently it is arguable whether the S is even an upgrade right now.
    2. Make it the range king. Make it 400 miles and you will get a lot of buyers. Some people will just buy the longest range EV they can find because range is that important to them.

    3. Rusty model 3's. That aluminum body on the S is a great asset, but not enough time has passed for this difference to really stand out. When the body is made of aluminum and the software gets over the air updates, they ought to be able to get some real marketing ammo out of the longevity potential of the car. 50-year software support pledge? I don't know... but I think plenty of owners and shoppers would recognize value there.

I think you are close. I think the "new, exciting, unexpected" is going to be primarily in the on-board technology, range and charging speed. The timeless quality of the basic body style will be unchanged, except maybe some tweaks in headlights and tail lights.
This will not be a "model year" change. All Tesla cars will continue to get OTA updates to keep the cars current with the latest technology, but these are not refreshes. My car is better than it was 3 months ago when delivered via OTA updates.

Dated? Tell that to Jaguar who copied the model S design on their XE model with everything except they had to add a grill. I would call Tesla design language to be "generic timeless." If you want something that really stands out in the crowd, you will have to wait for the Roadster II.

A big exterior refresh is not going to happen. That is not Elon's style at this time. Expect the WOW factor in an interior more like the model 3 with increased range and charging speed.

The rear motor will likely go to a permanent magnet. Induction was chosen in the beginning as a hedge against mineral supply issues in regards to permanent magnets. If no longer a concern as it appears, the switch will boost the car's overall efficiency.

I don’t want a refreshed Model S/X. I have a Standard Range Plus Model 3 and NO interest in 5 year old tech.

They played their part but I have no nostalgia for them.

Tesla S is old and showing it’s age. When the Germans land on our shores it will really make the S style seem outdated. Even Jaguar is more stylish then the X. I was behind a Model X the other day and it seemed small and aging in looks.

I was behind a Mercedes the other day. It seemed old... it had an exhaust pipe.

I thought people bought vehicles for transportation. According to many here they buy for looks and entertainment systems.

Perhaps that is why so many vehicle manufacturers have abysmal maintenance records.
Why worry about the ignition switch on your GM vehicle? It looks OK to me... ;)
