Yet you hope that Tesla will build a Prius sized/priced Tesla. That is what is nonsense. That is not Tesla's market at this time and won't be, if ever, their market for a long, long time. Look to Hyundai, Kia, and the Chinese to build a Prius sized/priced BEV.

The $35K Tesla is the bottom of Tesla's market right now and that probably wouldn't be in the mix today if Elon hadn't promised it 3 years ago. I don't expect the $35K model 3 to be around for long - maybe a year or so, Elon will save face, and then it will be discontinued.

I disagree. Selling cheap EV's fulfills their mission statement better than selling more expensive ones. I think Elon even said in a recent interview they will be looking to build an even cheaper car in the next 2-3 years.

As a stock owner, however, I really wish they sold the ones with the highest margins. But I don't think Tesla has the same mindset as other companies.

Bigger vehicless equal bigger profit. Isn't that why Tesla plans on releasing the semi tractor?

You could be right. But I interpret the mission statement a bit different. Rather than Tesla BEVs being all things to all people, Tesla's mission is to show the path forward to other makers that the BEV is a compelling solution to a sustainable future with alternative, non-polluting "fuel." Building the requisite charging system is part of that plan which most makers aren't willing to do - "let someone else or the government do it."

    Yes, a couple of thoughts:
    • The exterior/interior design is very familiar with respect to the model 3. You either love it or hate it.
    • The transition of the model 3 from sedan to SUV is more successful in my opinion, than the transition of the model S from sedan to SUV. The model Y wears its exterior dimensions more gracefully than the model X.
    • About a year ago, I predicted the model Y was going to be priced at around $50K. The 300 mile range configuration is $47K, so not too far off.
    • Optional 7 seat configuration is something I didn't see coming
    • With a starting price point of $39K (200 mi. range) to a performance option of 0-60 @ 3.5 sec. @ $60K. the model Y is going to knock the stuffings out of the SUV market, more so than the model 3 has done to the sedan market. All the SUVs to be released by other makers later this year and into the next two years (electric or not) are already obsolete. Tesla is now really disrupting the personal transportation market! (and the pickup is just over the horizon)
    • I am seriously considering placing a $2500 refundable deposit on the 300 mi. range model Y and I didn't think that would ever happen, I like my model 3 so much.
    • Elon Musk is one of the goofiest people on the world stage today. I find him fascinating and I just can't look away.

That seven seat option really surprised me!
I don't expect the back to seats to be very useful, however, I'm not worried as my wife ordered the 5 seat version.
Now for the 2 year wait ;)

Agree. the third row is going to be for small kids or maybe the dog.
My wife kept bringing up the model Y on our 3 mile walk this morning. SHE's the one who is hot to put down a $2500 deposit. SHE says SHE wants Autopilot and FSD on that car too! SHE is a non-tech person but SHE has become totally addicted to the currently limited self-driving capability of our model 3 in just two months. SHE is the one who sings the praises and details of autopilot to anyone who will listen. I told her not so fast about pre-ordering. I'd like to put around 3 years on MY model 3 before getting something else. But it is her money and if she wants a model Y asap, she will pull the trigger.

@Zythryn, as a current Tesla owner, I think you will get priority production for your model Y in 12 -15 months.

Disclaimer: maybe I was just too tired from a long trip but.....

Did anyone else think the Y unveil was low energy and just "off" compared to the model 3 party? My wife, who has a positive opinion of Tesla, walked by my screen literally as the Y was rolling onto the stage and I asked her to watch. She paused for a few seconds, gave it a mildly sarcastic "ooooh", and walked away. MUCH better stage lighting would have helped in that moment.

Anyway, I think the Y is what the Model 3 should have been.

Agree on all counts. The unveil was too long and tedious. Terrible lighting.

    you mean, like -
    * it may very well cannibalize sales of hoth the X & the 3?
One thing about taller suv-type Vehicles is that it gives that sensation of being able to see above other drivers who might be blocking the view of what's in front of them. So the Y may cause folks in line for the 3 to jump ship, possibly.

As for owners of the X , we unloaded our X due to (among several reasons including) concerns over complexity of falcon Wing doors, & out of warranty costs. Bloggers have mulled over the notion of getting out of the X for the model Y's simpler rear doors, for this kind of reasoning - or alternatively, staying in / buying an after-market service warranty contract for as long as possible on the X.

In reality, it's over 2 years away & in all probability, it too early say .... so will see how it goes.

Ya, the unveil wasn't as fantastic as some of them. I think part of that stems from the shock value wearing off of how amazing these cars are.
