This past Monday it came time for my wife's beloved '06 Prius to be retired with 182000 miles, mostly trouble free. It was time for new struts and apparently the brake accumulator was done for and at $1600 for a new one it just didn't seem like an appropriate expenditure for a car with that kind of mileage. This has been my wife's car and she was getting progressively more worried about a major problem coming up while she was on the road. As most of you know, when momma is worried everybody else is too! I had my concerns about her being stranded somewhere, and while it can certainly happen with any car the chances were growing with each passing mile. Fortunately when the accumulator problem came up I was driving and able to mitigate her panic.
Unfortunately, we did not purchase another Prius primarily because my wife hates the new console that extends to the dash in the G3. We tried the "C" but it just wasn't a fit for us and the "V" was just too far out of our price range with the options we prefer to have. After test driving and researching all the hatchbacks available she chose the Mazda 3 Grand Touring. The dealer gave us a respectable amount in trade for the Prius as well. We will certainly miss the exceptional mileage and comfort we had with the car. The Prius is the best car we have ever owned.
Most importantly I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone here for their advice and and extensive knowledge that you have given me. I will still be on the board occasionally, but more so as a lurker because we have several Prius' in our Fleet here at work and are looking to add more with our 2013-2014 budget purchases. I wish you all happiness and safe travels.

    Mike.

Just cause you buy another car, doesn't mean you have to leave Bra... just saying.

That comes with the 2.5 right? Nice car, I was actually looking at a Mazda5 with the manual trans before deciding on another Prius.

Mike, here's hoping you have as many (or more) happy miles in the Mazda. Don't be a stranger.

Thanks guys, I will be around a bit as I mentioned for work, but its not as important ; ).

The Mazda 3 we got has the 2.0 Skyactive engine with a 6 speed auto trans. It has pretty good acceleration and the ride is quiet and comfortable (except when she has the sunroof open). In mixed driving she has been averaging 34mpg since Monday, while it is not the 48 she was getting in the Prius we can live with that. The funny thing is that our 14 year old son who is looking forward to driving soon loves the Mazda3. He has always said he would never drive the Prius.

The one I really liked was the Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed version... it comes with a 2.3 liter Inter-cooled Turbo, 263Hp/280ft lbs of torque and a 6 Speed manual- 0 to 60 under 6 seconds and a 13 second 1/4 mile, now that's fun to drive!

Hmmm. Count for what? I've seen it used here before, and thought it just meant, "me too" or "I agree." And what's with the "Bra" bit? Is everybody your bra?

Teh lingo is from back in the day when I spent many hours surfing... in Hawaii when I was on the beach they called me a Haole Boy... even though the current POTUS is more white bread than my mother... hell... my own cousins on the res say I'm too whiteboy looking too... mostly because I have a beard, and most of my brothers and cousins don't.

Good choice on the 3. My cousin just bought one with the "Skyactive system" and with the manual transmission he averages in the high 30's for mpg.

    Excellent.
Reading this thread, my feeling was that you so liked your original Prius that it was somewhat Sad that you felt you couldn't be happy with the Gen 3 Prius.
Nothing against the Mazda-I've never owned a Mazda.
But hopefully now you can get back to enjoying the benefits of owning a Hybrid, and maybe nearly another decade of reliability and service.

Since the Gen 4 is reportedly more "Sporty" in driving feel and response, I'd be interested in your opinion having been an owner of not only a Gen 2 Prius but also a Mazda 3 Grand Touring.
How does this Prius stack up in driving feel comparison?
