what typical speed on the highway?

i must say, the tyres might be an issue. try pumping them up to 42f/40r just for fun.

Anywhere from 55-75mph, depending on if I am on the interstate

Update: this was my MFD display after reseting it. No other changes have been done to my car. 1484672754540.jpg

If you had a oil change and they overfilled it (like adding 5 quarts) it can cause low MPG.

In your first picture of the 5-minute interval mileage display, it shows 10 minutes with just over 50MPG. The car is capable of better mileage. I suspect the your driving style, short trips, winter weather and less than optimal tires are the primary causes of your getting worse mileage.

@DonDNH- that was not my car in the first picture, but I would have to agree with you. I tend to be a bit heavy on the throttle (thanks to my old V8 monster of a motor that was in my truck)

@xpcman- I have no idea how much they exactly added, but the mechanic has a prius of his own with anywhere from 300k-350k miles on it, so I'm guessing he put in the right amount...idk with the oil additive that they put in though...

I think overfill is more prevalent when the spec'd. amount is just a bit more than some round quart or liter value. Our Prius is 4.2 liter (with filter change). Previous Civic Hybrid was 3.2 liter. With the latter I was still thinking to "do the right thing" during warranty, dutifully took the car to dealership for oil changes. And they regularly slammed in 4 liters.

I've done all the oil changes on our Prius myself, but went on a tour of the service department once (new owner's night) and noted they use graduated pitchers for oil changes, pre-filled carefully to spec'd. amounts with (bulk) Toyota oil. That I think is progress: accurate fill, and stops the avalanche of empty motor oil bottles.

there's a huge difference between mpg's at 55 and 75. i'm starting to think there's nothing more wrong with your car than age and tyres.

Well, the motor is shot, but probably. Hopefully will get new tires in a couple months. Thank you all for the help!
