Dianne, I thought you had been quiet on the board for a couple of days. I too am glad to hear you're not seriously hurt. Best wishes for a speedy recovery: for both yourself and your Prius. --TK

Looks like your Prius took quite a hit and accepted the damage instead of passing it along to you. I know you are feeling the pain of losing such a great car, but I am very glad to hear you were able to walk away from an encounter (regardless of the speed) with a big rig.

If you are looking to replace your Prius with another GenII, then move quickly: Going, going, almost gone!

Otherwise, do not fear the 2010. I had a hard time leaving my 2007, but I think the GenIII is the truly superior car.

    update

The car sustained some pretty serious damage UNDER the trappings... it's smushed in the back pan area between the spare and back taillight panel. That strange grayish patch looking thing on the metal is crunched too. The bumper's smashed but not shattered. Not a taillight was damaged... none of the hatch was that I can see although it closes a tad askew.

Body shop and adjusters agree $5800 damage.

One a side note, I had to laugh that my contact at the body shop of my choice (Bay Cities in the south bay area, they do SUCH fabulous work) mentioned he'd be flatbedding the car to "the dealership" to have the hybrid battery and other things removed, power disconnected" and then trucked back to be fixed ... I asked "what dealership?" assuming he knew to bring it here and he said "Oh, to Carson..." and I said absolutely not! You will not bring it there! You have to bring it HERE!" (LOL) ... I suppose a few of you might recognize the iront of the car going to Carson.

I do believe I may have risen a few decibels in this communication... needless to say, it's sitting out in MY lot in Manhattan Beach waiting to be brought back tomorrow for the cosmetic repair... and so I wait.

The girl who hit me was caught. An insurance company with several A's in their name is covering her portion of the damage. Mine's Mercury. Both have been very commubicative. I am renting a hybrid Camry for now. Enjoying its girth and ride, missing the fuel economy of the Prius and of course, my HOV stickers!

The body is healing. After that, the Cash4Clunkers fizzaazzle for the month, and the root canal I had this morning at 7:30, I feel quite invincible. :drama: NOT!

Thanks a bunch for the kind words and sweet thoughts!

    Re: update

I was the victim of a hit and run in late April -- very glad they found the guilty party for you.

With my 2010 hit just two weeks ago, I also was in the rental car world for awhile. Dodge Charger w/ 3.5Hemi! Just drove it around town and I achieved just under 14 MPG.

My sympathies to those of you who have had to rent a Charger or 300 while your Prii are being repaired. I've had to rent them occassionally for work....what a piece of junk they are! They can barely get out of their own way.

    hybrid rental

I rented a Camry hybrid 2009 here at the dealership (we have hybrid rentals) and am getting 37 mpg average. Can't you (in the hemi) choose a more economical rental?

Time to declare it a total loss and transfer your HOV stickers to a brand new GenIII V with no AT :D

    I don't theeeeeeenk so Stimpy!
The day the HOVs go dark with no chance at re-start, I would probably be in an IV with SR. Love the 17"s and HIDs but really want the sunroof.

This was my thought as well. Same with the truck driver that hit the other Prius. Do the cops or insurance companies check their phone records?

So glad you are okay Dianne.

I have no idea what she was freakin' doing. Anything BUT paying attention, that's for sure, because she had a Prius sitting directly in her path at a traffic light stopped, taillights red/bright because I was on the brakes. She couldn't have been paying attention to lights, because the one I was stopped at was RED. And, other cars were stopped too!

Believe it or not, even after taking off and leaving me, causing me to have to run and write down her license #, the Huntington Beach PD did not cite her for hit and run. I wonder who she's "doing".. or whose daughter she is.

Geesh, the sorry state of the nation, these kids not taking responsibility for their actions. No consequences. Her boyfriend's car, she is an excluded driver, yet AAA steps in and covers the damn repairs. Good for me, but what does SHE learn? Where are her natural consequences?

Maybe if you are lucky, the boyfriends car IS insured, and she just didn't want anyone submitting a claim. It doesn't matter if she was insured or not. The insurance goes with the car and anyone driving it. Not sure, but I believe the insurance even stays with the car is it is stolen and the theif hits someone.

She told me that she was an excluded driver on the boyfriend's car and to not tell anyone she was driving. I was a tad incredulous... I mean, she was alone in the car so who would I have stated WAS driving? A ghost? I started to dial 911 and she ran off. In the car.

That's what frosted me. She left me sitting there on the edge of the curb, holding my head (it ached like hell) and advising her NOT to leave as she was getting ready to run off.

I have uninsured motorist coverage. I'd have been fine.

I would definitely put in a call to the county DAs office and ask them to explain why no charges are being brought in the case.

Glad to hear your okay. Sorry I live way across the country and can't do business with you. Hope you and the Prius heal...

CA HOV stickers don't transfer. They go with the VIN, not the driver, and there are no new ones. I lost mine in a similar fashion.

What will probably happen here is that once AAA has settled with you they will take action against the driver to recover what they paid out. They're very aggressive in that regard.

    It's now possible:

Effective January 1, 2009, DMV may issue new Clean Air Stickers to ORIGINAL owners of qualifying hybrids purchased to replace hybrids that have been subsequently declared total/loss salvage. Applications for replacement must be filed within six months of the date of total loss/salvage.

    That would just infuriate me. I don't want her to get away with this. {shakes fist}
