My breaks went out! Could have crashed in to cross traffic! Plus I could not accelerate!

I'm mad now. This break failure thing caused me to run a red light.

Luckily for me this happened at about 2300 hours when there was hardly anyone on the road.

So it was a cold night. The temperature was below freezing. We have had snow and rain all day. There was no salt or sand on the road at all. I was traveling at about 20mph when I came upon a red light that just changed. I was a good 100 feet away from the light and should have had plenty of room to stop.

I applied my breaks gently. Not slowing down enough I applied more breaks. All of a sudden the breaks gave out! I was not stopping! Closer and closer I got to the intersection I stomped the breaks as hard as I could but I kept going! Not slowing down at all! I felt my tires stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going and stopping and going but my car was not slowing down! I entered the intersection preparing for the worst. Luckily there was no one but me there that night or I might not be here today. Since I could not stop I just decided to go on though.

That whole night my breaks gave out every time I tried to stop. I was lucky to make it home by going very slow.

Also every time I tried to accelerate I would lose power. If I held down the accelerator my engine would rev up and then quit then rev up and quit very quickly.

These are two major issues that Toyota needs to fix ASAP! I dont think I will ever buy another Prius again.

I think I want to get rid of my unsafe Prius. I think I will feel safer in a Hummer. Not the pussy H2 H3 wanna be Hummers but the original monster H1 Hummer. I think I will get one of those and hang truck balls on the trailer hitch. Yeah that should be safe.

Fore sale 2006 plug in Prius with mods. $150k no less.

Probably a figment of your imagination. Are you sure it was your breaks? If so, then it was definitely a figment of your imagination.

If you want to get an H1 Hummer, be sure to get the H1 Alpha.

I'd trust my life to a Huffy than a Hummer.

    The Force,

File a report with the NHTSA and demand that Toyota recall the
weather... and just to be safe, the climate as well.

But why stop there? The fundamental problem is that the Earth's axis is
at an angle to the plane of its rotation around the Sun. Obviously, the
solar system is broken. Pretty soon the sky will be falling.

There really is only one, 100% effective solution.
    * Einstein was wrong, God does play dice with the universe.
    * Mankind itself is proof.
    * "Free will" does no absolve knowingly taking leave of your senses.
Write the Pope and demand that he recall the Big Bang.

Now go back to sleep, there are no monsters under the bed.

PS: Before you sell your car, can I get the rear wheel skirts and
aero front wheel covers? I think they're too way cool to be wasted
on some schlub of a buyer.

(Daniel, yes, I know, "There is no God." Gimmie a break will ya?
I'm just paraphrasing this famous guy, whom I must admit had
far too many bad hair days and needed tonsorial help in the worst
    way.)

I'm sorry, no offence intended, but I find your description very hard to believe.

If this "break [sic]" problem actually happened, you would be onto your Toyota service department pronto, or reporting your situation to the relevant authorities, rather than posting this here. The fact that you haven't mentioned that you done either of these things smells fishy to me.

Besides, the recall is on NHW30 Prius models, not your 2006 model.

Did somebody hack into "The force's" user account? I find it hard to believe this post was indeed written by him.

My teeth are worn down a bit more after forcing myself to read that.

Hopefully you can get a "brake" by fixing your "breaks".

I've experienced problems very similar to the OP's, both in my Prius and in other cars. I remember one Christmas eve when I had the same problem with my boots: The ice on the road in front of my house was so slippery that you couldn't stand on it without sliding down the hill. Crampons would have been appropriate.

Pulsing brakes and lack of acceleration are the result of very slippery roads. One of the "problems" with my 2006 Prius is that the combination of VSC, traction control, and ABS effectively mask slippery road conditions. Often I don't realize that the roads have become slippery until I see other cars in the ditch.

My Prius does a very, very good job compensating for lousy road conditions. I have to remind myself to look for warning signs; otherwise I can be surprised to find that I am driving on ice, and the limits of physics will ultimately prevail.

I've said this many times before, but I'll say it again here: There is only so much that technology can do to make up for bad roads. Lack of traction is lack of traction. If you don't have friction, there isn't much a car can do about it.

I had a similar experience. I was pressing on the accelerator and the car simply would not move! No matter how hard I pressed - nothing! Not only that, but it mysteriously seemed to have shrank. So I tried pressing on the brake, and the entire brake pedal had disappeared! Clearly Toyota screwed up this one.

Clearly you should have pressed harder.

For those of us old enough to have cut our teeth driving manual transmissions, did you ever reach up to clutch an automatic and hit the brake with your left foot? That was always good for a shock, and easy to do with older American cars with the wide brake pedals.

Sounds compicated maybe some simplification is in order?

Newton's laws of motion are often stated in layman’s terms for simplification and easy recollection as:
    • First Law: "An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force" or "A body persists in a state of uniform motion or of rest unless acted upon by an external force."
    • Second Law: "Force equals mass times acceleration" or "F = ma."
    • Third Law: "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."
It's always fun to experience physics when driving on ice...

...which is mostly the First Law, at least until the crash.

Man I wasn't sure if he was joking or not until i saw the price tag for the car.

Oh btw: I think your inability to stop was caused by the addition of that 5 ton battery pack. Clearly your braking system, and not the road conditions, is undersized to meet your braking demand.

    Oh give me a ...

Who taught you how to drive? If you want to stop the car, use the brakes, not the breaks. Try that next time and I'll bet the car will stop.
