So I finally had a few minutes to try out one of the new Electrify America (EA) stations in Lincoln, NE which is one of several now open along the I-80 corridor through Nebraska. I was in our 2nd Gen Leaf which meant I obviously had to use chademo. At most of these stations, there are 4 parking stalls and 8 plugs (only 1 of which is a chademo). While I was charging, one of the spots was ICEd, likely by a worker inside the very near convenience store (Casey's). Other spots were ICEd, but much quicker due to people running inside to grab stuff. Yes, it's that close to the entrance.
The interface is pretty easy to use with plenty of on screen prompts telling you what to do. It's nice that it's more like a traditional gas pump where you can just run your credit card instead of belonging to a certain charging network (like ChargePoint or Blink). It is also very expensive. $5 startup fee and 35 cents a minute after that. Those are some pricey electrons. I understand these stations needing to make a little bit of money, but jeez.
The fun started after I charged for about 20 minutes and needed to unplug. I couldn't get the chademo off my car for the life of me. Called EA customer service and they tried everything from the software side despite me knowing that it was a mechanical thing. After being on the line with them for almost an hour, they finally said they'd send someone out. Had to have someone come pick me up and kill time for almost 4 hours before the guy made it out to remove it. He claimed it just needed twisting and jiggling. Regardless, they obviously went with the cheapest chademo plugs they could find. Have never had any issues with any of ChargePoint's. Not a fun experience.
What they did do right is future proofing the CCS plug for 350 kW charging. That will be some incredible speed once there are cars that support that.

350kW ... well THAT oughta cook some of the poorly thermal managed rides - on the day they ever build it.

As for Electrify AM - Many find that blink equipment is pretty bottom-of-the-barrel too.

Yep, someone will do it just to say they have faster charging than Tesla. But it will definitely lead to some short life battery packs.

That price is for both chademo and ccs. There isn't a L2 at any of the EA stations to the best of my knowledge. Just quick chargers.

He said there is a $5 startup fee, so if you only got 1 kwh that would be $5.35 per kwh. In other words it turns on how much you use to defray that initial $5 hit.

That would turn on whether you are pulling 3kw, 6kw, or 10 KW, which is the highest they'll do, I believe.

also greatly depends on the charging rate, quick chargers/Superchargers vary greatly in speed depending on temperatures and battery percentage
max for Leaf is 50 kW, it will do close to that until about 55-60% full

interesting. so a fixed price, but variable charging. that would mean cheaper for vehicles with higher charge rates?
is that to deter folks with smaller batteries or less sophisticated vehicles?

Not sure, but you are definitely right that it becomes much cheaper at higher charger rates. Given the current pricing structure a 350kW vehicle could charge pretty darn cheap actually.

Many regions only allow power companies to directly charge a fee per kWh. So an EV charging company has to charge fees in a round about way to cover the electric usage. Time is often used. The rate is set on the fastest possible charge a car can take, plus a rate for parking. It also helps to getting a person to move their car once charged.

Electrify America is VWs punishment for the diesels. Now, they'll be punishing our wallets.
