Fear of tickets. :D I do wish speed limits were real limits; set them where they should be and then not exceed them. I suppose that goes against human nature, but the engineer in me doesn't like it.

wow, I just saw this thread resurrected so I thought I'd give an update, I didn't know that it got so many replies!

On the drive back from the us grand prix in Indianapolis a few weeks ago I went on a side country road between two exits to let the gf drive the Prius. She got one 55 mpg segment, one 60, and one 75. Not bad for first 12 miles in it, showed her how to do all the fun stuff, next time will try to get her to accelerate less than her 2400 rpm tendency.

The following weekend we took her 2000 civic lx on a road trip to Ann Arbor, she had never used cruise control so I showed her how to use that. Kept the speed between 65 and 70 and got around 39 mpg for the trip, showed her how to neutral-idle-glide to stoplights and down hills and used the scan gauge to monitor ife.

So I think she is starting to understand that driving style can directly influence mpg.

You can't please everyone, maybe your GF is just a complainer. Tell her to take a cab next time.
