My PiP - After One Year (Stats)

    It has been one year since I got my PiP for $25k. I have driven 10,761 miles. Here are some data.

    Electricity Used: 1,035 kWh (Plus 12 to 15% for charging loss)

    Gasoline Used: 107 gallons

    Fuel Ratio: 44% EV (electricity) and 56% HV (gas)
    - I was only expecting it to be 1/3 EV and 2/3 HV. Very happy with my result.

    Fuel Efficiency Breakdown: 132 MPGe (EV) and 56 MPG (HV)
    - PiP is very efficient with either fuel! Extremely satisfying.

    Gas consumption (Ignoring energy from electricity): 100 MPG
    - All miles driven divided by only the gas consumed

    Combined Fuel Efficiency (electricity counted): 75 MPGe
    - EPA estimated 58 MPGe. Very pleased from a 5-seater midsize car.

    Average Speed: 21 MPH
    - A lot of city (stop lights/signs) driving with many short trips (2 to 5 miles)

    Average EV Range: 12.4 miles
    - (4,757 miles / 1,035 kWh) x 2.7 kWh (usable energy in PHV battery)

    PiP has been the best car I have owned. It is the most practical, efficient, affordable, lowest in emission and fastest refueling plugin car available. I had an issue with the grabby brake but it went away after a few weeks.

    Best of all, it is an ideal plugin car for me (not for everyone).

    Forget to mention that Trip A in the screenshot is my lifetime.

    There is 1,000 limit (or 10,000?) in the trip counter so it restarted from 1.

    10,761 is showing as 761.

    that's interesting. i use trip A for tank, so, it must be 10,000. i didn't know there was a limit.

    I've only had my PIP 3 months, and I'm averaging 21% EV. My average mileage so far is about 75 MPG. I had a 2006 Prius for 7 years, and was getting about 51 MPG. I'm also very happy with my PIP.

    No matter the ratio of the two fuels, you can rely on PiP that it'll be ultra efficient.

    It appears that your happiness is from the efficiency and not from the EV ratio/bias.

    For my electric miles, I averaged 218 Wh per mile. That's with using heated seats in the winter and A/C in the summer.

    That figure is without the charging loss. I think all of other EVs and PHEVs report kWh consumption without the charging loss.

    I wonder how other plugin hybrids and EVs (of any size) compare to what I am getting.

    Anyone can share how much the electric bill is per month

    I know many factors come into play including EV miles, electric company rates etc. just looking for a ball park. Sales guy said about a dollar a day for 12,000 miles per year is typical. Not sure if that was accurate or bull

    PiP uses about 3kWh per charge. If your rate is 11 cents (average cost) per kWh, that's 33 cents per charge. If you charge it twice a day, that's 66 cents -- could go 25 miles.

    My rates are higher than average.

    That's actually pretty spot on.

    Say all 12,000 miles is on EV. I get 12.4 miles (my average) per charge so I will need 968 charges. Each charge takes about 3.2 kWh with charging loss added. I will consume 3,098 kWh.

    At 11 cents per kWh, that'll cost $341 for that year (365 days).

    in norcal, PGE rate plans are very complicated and there are many options.

    the PiP timer is key, as I start a charge in early morning when the rates are super-low (<5 cents per kwh). at other times, i compare the cost of gas per mile to cost of electricity per mile. if the cost of electricity is >> gas, then i won't charge (generally, when i'm in usage Tier 3+, middle of the day, on a weekday). if it's close, i'll go ahead and charge for the sake of fewer ghgs!

    The rates are super-low in the early morning only if you have a time-of-use rate plan. The "default" rate plan is a tiered non-time-of-use plan (the more you use per month, the more it costs per kwh).

    :)It's easy to assume that EV miles are "gas free, and thus free". I normally do five charges at home and the same amount at work, per week. My overall charging cost are insignificant compared to other things in life.

    31+ thousand miles, 19 months' ownership, charge at home every day (more on weekends), three major cross-country round trips (VA - KS, VA - MS, VA - MA), multiple shorter interstate trips (VA - NYC, VA - MD Shore, etc), plus my son the Hedgehog used to get his meathooks on the PiP once in a while (brrr...). Result: 19% EV, 81% HV. Didn't bother counting the gallons I bought. PiP's indicated MPG: 59. Happy, happy, happy owner :) except I spent too much $$ on cool Prius mods I learned about on this site. Once I get the JDM folding LED turn signal mirrors, I SWEAR it'll be it... until the aftermarket cooks up a 30-mile EV traction battery for the PiP, he hee.

    It's of course the non-EV mileage of long interstate trips that kills the EV/HV ratio. My gut feeling is that without our long trips we'd be somewhere around 40% EV, based on my daily commute.

    That's part of life though which is why it is important to have high efficiency from both fuels in all driving conditions and range.

    Fuel ratio can change but efficiency remains high. It is why I am so satisfied. Having a full cargo and 5 seats is just icing on the cake.
