I just installed an ebay purchased Toyota Navigation 2016 map update DVD Gen 6 Version 15.1 U97 that loaded and works perfectly. The CD cost $12.95 with free shipping.

Wish it could update via "Entune"...

Can this be done via SD card or USB device with maps downloaded from the internet?

I thought the Gen 3 Nav updated via USB rather than DVD?

It changed mid-Gen 3, for the 2012 facelift.

The 2010-11, 7 inch nav unit has a 4 CD changer and a separate map DVD slot. All you do to update the maps is put a new DVD in the slot. It can't tell whether bought a real one at the dealer or a pirated one for $12.95. The map DVD is physically in the slot at all times.

The 2012+, 7 inch unit has just one slot, no changer, can play CDs and DVDs, and keeps the map data on an internal hard drive. In an update, it copies new map data from either a map DVD that you put in the (only) slot, or a USB key. Since it gets copied, the dealership only needs one; it just lives in their special-service-tools cabinet. The copy can take up to an hour, so there's likely a charge for shop time, even though most of the time it's just doing its own copy thing after the tech starts it off.

But this unit won't begin an update until given a license code obtained from a Toyota web site based on the dealer's DVD or USB key serial number and the unique id in your nav unit, so it's no longer as simple to just buy an eBay copy and pop it in.

In 2012+ there are also 6.1 inch displays with nav, made by a different maker and how those are updated, I haven't looked into.

Yes, it is just as simple as loading the navigation CD update.......took less than five minutes to load.

    No I'm not a dealer and I don't believe it's illegal.

According to your profile, you have a 2010, so as expected, you were able to simply slip the DVD in the slot. It is just as easy whether you bought an official one from the dealer (suggested price $169.95) or a cheaper copy from eBay.

It is only if you had the newer, 2012+ unit, that you would need to have the Toyota-generated license code, based on the update media serial number and your nav unit's unique ID, to be able to load the update. That makes it more complicated for the 2012+ owners to use eBay copies for updates.

As for legality, there is little doubt that the eBay seller is liable to Toyota for copyright infringement (unless they somehow, legitimately, bought a bunch of the genuine disks at such an incredible discount they can sell them for less than a tenth of list and profit? hmm).

As to whether you're breaking any law by buying their copy ... I'm not sure, think it may vary in different parts of the world.

Anyway, it's clear Toyota thought it was cheaper to just update their hardware in 2012 to require license codes, than pay their lawyers to play whack-a-mole with eBay sellers.

    Bisco,

Why is it OK to talk about purchasing a mini-VCI system from eBay but not a Nav DVD upgrade?

    They are both pirated software?

good question. i have read that danny doesn't like talk of illegal practices here, specifically gps updates, but don't recall any mention of tech stream. i'm not a mod, just an innocent bystander.

nope. but they do have a mild presence here, and danny and the mods get a lot of first hand info. i guess that is support in a way. but nothing financial that we know of, and constructive criticism is always welcome.

That is nice. This forum seems to be the biggest community based online forum for Prius, and I am very thankful for all the responses and helpful information provided on this forum!

Looks like the Toyota copyright police nabbed another one.
