Does the dealer charge for the update if the car is still under warranty?
If not, what is the update cost?
How do you tell what map version you have?
Is it possible to update via DVD?

Depends on the dealer. Usually $100++, from what I've read. It's cheaper to buy a nice Garmin Nuvi with lifetime maps and traffic info.

see if there's some type of info screen in the menu, the version should be in there somewhere.
toyota has a bunch of different systems, not sure if yours is dvd, usb, flash, what have you.

What is the normal venue for updating the onboard nav software on older Prius (2013 models)?? Afriend was told by the local dealer it was a 250$ charge. Sounds way out of line..Thanks.

Original Gen 3 (2010-11) had only one choice of nav unit; it just works with a DVD. Updating is trivial, you buy a newer DVD, pop the old one out, new one in, done.

Facelift Gen 3 (2012-15) had two choices of nav: the smaller screen (CD slot above) or larger screen (folds, CD slot behind, like the original). So you need to know which one you've got. The larger-screen one now has an internal hard drive, and you get a dealer to load the update onto it. They already have the thumb drive for it in the shop, but you need to buy a license code, and also pay for the shop time while the little beach ball spins. That adds to the price, annoyingly.

The smaller-screen one, if I'm not mistaken, may just have the maps on an SD card, and is probably as easy as the original: old card out, new card in.

Thanks for the detaailed info. The Prius 4 has a CD slot behind (?) as I recalled, the face of the screen which open to expose ..So, if I'm reading you right..thats the one with the larger screen, etc..Costly..as annoyingly a to be sure. I'll pass this one..Thanks~!

    Another question..
Will the updated software to the 3gen Nav system also include the backup guiding lines seen on the newer Prius ??

Some trims of the Gen 3 came with parking assist, lane keeping, and radar cruise (done by a separate "driving support ECU" behind the glove box, with a bunch of extra sensors), and in those Gen 3s, I believe you will see guide lines while reversing. The wiring diagram shows, in those models, the rear camera cable connected to the extra ECU instead of directly to the center display; that ECU computes and superimposes the lines on the image, which is then fed to the center display.

I suppose it would be possible to explore obtaining all the driving assist parts (the ECU and all extra sensors and wiring) and installing them in a Gen 3 that didn't come with them, but it sounds like a lot of money and work.

If you have Toyota Touch & GO Nav then you download the maps, put them on a usb drive, update the unit and then you must enter the activation code
You can either get the activation code from the dealer ~120 euro
Or you can get the code from another source, as I did: 70 euro
This also applies to Touch & GO Plus and Touch & GO 2

Thanks for the great replies..While logic agrees with the expected results as pointed, I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who could report definitely on their upgrade, as it applies to the back up cam program..?

Could you share a link to that download site, etc..the steps to watch out for? Also, where does one obtain the activation code, ?

first make a photo of the nav unit itself, and the maps version installed, so we know exactly what nav you have
you can also identify the unit here:
