On TV, I'd heard that the claims were it only cost about $1 of electricity to shoot down a plane w/this.

There's some pretty hilarious discussion at TiVocommunity on this.

Sweet! I saw the video footage of the various kills it has made! It still takes some time to burn a hole through something, but burn through it does! Some targets are not suited for the LASER!

Just get the Star Trek phaser sound and incorporate it into the Fire Control System!

I was glad to hear a report on TV that these new lasers will be infrared, and not those horrible green super-powerful kind that can blind airplane pilots. Thank goodness. And for a dollar a shot, heck, why not.

Does it really matter if they're infrared or not? Even if the human eye can't see them, can't they still blind someone?

I mean, from the demo, if a human were the target, it seems blindness would be the least of your worries...

I for one am glad they finally got the darn thing mounted on a line ship... now they need to put em on all of them, and not just one weapon a ship either... especially the larger ones we keep sending to the ME arena, so they can be used to fry the little boats that the Iranians say they will use to fight the big ships.

The question is: how effective is the laser in various weather conditions? Is propagation an issue, especially with rain?
