Just thought you might need a laugh for the day. Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, from a distance, it might look good.

Forget the tape, those empty lug nuts are an accident just waiting to happen.

One of our inlaws made an over-the-air antenna...

Can't they tell that it does not work? BTW, I've made a similar one (well, the difference between that pic and mine is the difference between the wheel pic and an actual wheel), and it works great, and your in-laws' one is pretty close.

For numerous urban folks, that is likely plenty good. Save the neatness judging for viewers in weaker signal zones.

On the full res you can see it doesn't have a chance, at least as-is: so many bits connect to nothing. My wife took the original pic, and our Apple TV was using her pics for a screen saver, and I took a snap of the TV screen.

But yeah, a slightly mod'd coat hanger can pull in a high res, clear image.

Oh, as in the balun leads are merely screwed down to the wood without connecting to the coathanger segments? I hadn't noticed that earlier. If it works, it must be in a really strong signal zone.

Yes, that's what I meant. The balun is there, but not even connected to the receiving wires. So it is a perfect match for that wheel, with the aluminum HVAC tape spokes.

But how could they not tell that the reception sucked? And what level of EE degree does it take to know that the wires might need to be connected?

    LOL.

I believe there are places where it won't suck. Such as atop Queen Anne Hill in Seattle.

You know, you can get a regular outside antenna for $30. And small enough to put in the attic...
