I think the idea has some merit and could have been very handy to me in my taxi job.

I don't think people would be unhappy to receive a flyer from an owner. In fact I think it would be well received and they'd be quite amused. I'm sure most would hold onto it, take it home and read it - if it were well designed.

I'm sure there was something like this available on a website ages ago based mainly on the release of the 2004 gen2. I did have it on my computer until a year or so ago but just can't find it now. Shame.

The odds are the kid at the gas station didn't hear it from Rush though. Most of us don't really care about him. If you are a listener though, I'm guessing saying the prius produces less ghg isn't going to help much in an argument either.

Don't assume a source or point of view. Its best to explain the batteries get recycled. etc. If you do want to have a conversation about rush, then at least ask if the person listens and believes.

The person may be concerned about mining pollution, or american jobs, or balance of trade, etc. I would never assume an anti-prius person didn't like it because of ghg.

Prius batteries are very recyclable, but on top of that, the Nickel Metal Hydride battery used in Prius is the most environmentally-friendly type of battery made these days, especially compared to NiCad batteries, which contain toxic cadmium. And while NiMh does indeed contain nickel, we know that nickel is a basic ingredient of steel, and you can't build any car without steel.

The M part of NiMh can be a variety of non-toxic metals, whose environmental impact is based on the mining methods used.

Maybe this flyer would be a good idea! Of course, mine would have to talk about Lithium Ion batteries.

Peeps are 'ignant. A lot of people have strong opinions about things they have no knowledge about. I have had to educated a co-worker on battery life as well but I suspect strongly she already knows more than I do about these cars (despite her likely never having been in one, having read nothing about them, and a general lack of interest in automobiles), so probably tucked my argument into her mind's dust bin and probably continues to tout battery longevity as a problem in owning a Prius.

    don't feed the "prius stereotype"

not that some rural 4x4'r is going to put the big picture together..but..
if you go back thru the process of making the batteries you may not like the results

He s alive and sings money honey baby!
Myths don't die, as long as they serve a purpose. Anyway, I changed my mind! haha! Maybe we should not respond at all in such situations.
Just throw a sticker on prius. "Prius pollutes because of STEEL"
or "Nickel pollutes LESS than STEEL" .

Are we not all making assumptions about the 'haters'?

Maybe they're not all actually negative about the car but just repeating wrong information that they'd heard? Perhaps they're curious and wish to hear the other side?

I got all the fud all the time when in my cab job, yet I only had one or two real haters. Most people were just curious to know more about that weird Japanese car that doesn't make much noise.

The media has been spreading all the misinformation for decades, and lots of people have lost their common sense, even many "educated" people, or should I say, "people who have high degrees". I've seen some technically very smart people on this board falls into the environmental propaganda.

Please, look at the video by George Carlin and get some common sense.

    Carlin is right, you know.
'Save the Planet' is actually shorthand for 'Save the Planet for Future Humanity.'

That may be an oxymoron, but so are children if selfishness is the only goal.

...I was trying to get a date check on the George Carlin piece, but if you go back to early 1990's, the US public was outraged about waste plastics and global warming concerns were subsiding. I think it's possible global warming concerns will subside again.

The last great AGW scare for Merkins was due to high fuel prices.

It was ozone depletion concerns that subsided, and that's because a worldwide chlorofluorocarbon ban has taken effect.

I think you have it right. Just some kids working at the gas station for gosh sakes, no need to build re-education camps, just something fun to hand them. I like the QR code thing, might even just put that on the biz card and say "Learn the TRUTH about Hybrids!!!!" Make them curious. They scan the QR and it opens the PriusChat file link to the easy read Prius brochure.

In the end, relative environmental impact is a value judgement. Most of us here see CO2 reduction + oil use reduction as a higher priority than increased metals values used in the production of hybrids/EV's. As far as Prius PHV most but not all seem to agree with that. Once you get to EV's or plug-ins there is some further disagreement. Both NiMH and Li batts seem to be considered relatively eco-friendly so you have that to work with. In USA perception is reality so we tend to have public discussions about technology on a political debate level.
