    Hi all -

My 2002 Prius has been sitting in my driveway non-operational for about 18 months now, after brake warning system lights and buzzer went off (brake accumulator needed replacement). For a few months I did let it run some in my driveway, but that didn't keep the 12v charged enough, so once it died I let the car just sit.
The car has had the inverter pump replaced, and it did get a new hybrid battery in late 2013 from the dealer. Tires were relatively new when car quit, and it does have a trailer hitch.
I'm trying to figure out how to dispose of this vehicle while hopefully getting some $ out of it. Is there a market for a non-working Prius (I live in rural West Texas, close to San Angelo)?

Put it on Craigslist, in the Auto Parts section, Offer it as a whole parts car--talk up the good stuff and tell what's needed to get it running. I wish you were closer, I have a used parts source.

As is, imho, it's probably not worth more than about $500 even with the relatively new tires and traction battery. Alternatively, you could charge the 12v battery & see if it will start, and then get the brake accumulator fixed. Old Prii are nice kids cars (or for old gearheads like me.)
    Good luck, Linda.

In terms of charging the 12v, can I hook it up to a portable battery charger while it is still installed in the car?

    $500 would be generous.
I sent one for scrap not long ago and got about $200.
If you need a tax write off, you may find a local charity that accepts cars.
Or you could buy a different Prius with a bad battery and put yours in it's place. The other Prius could probably be had for under $1,500

If you are willing to strip the hybrid battery out of it you can get some money for it.
There may be a local hybird repair place willing to buy the pack.
What city are you located in Texas.
I may be willing to buy the battery if you can put it on a pallet.

Also, if you go to scrap it, many haulers let you keep the tires, which you can then sell. Before the hauler arrives, take off all but one lug nut per tire. Have the final one loosened. then when the hauler arrives they let you remove the tires as they drag it onto the flatbed.

The battery pack may be degraded after sitting unused for so long. Prius's seem to be very "use it or lose it" propositions.

BTW, Wish I could get that trailer hitch. Going to need to get one soon.

There was a recall for the brake accumulator on my 2010. Don't know if it applied to gen 2.

if you can't sell it, there are charities that will haul it away, and you get a tax deduction.

    You aren't parting are you?

I'd be interested in the trailer hitch if you could pull it off and take it to the Grayhound station.

About donating it. My experience with vehicle donations is that the amount deductible isn't very much (better to see what a wrecking yard would give you) and the ones I talked to required that the vehicle be in running condition--they auction them off and take the proceeds.

I'd have to drive 800 miles to get it, keep that in mind. How much would you need for the whole shootin' match?

Sorry for the delay, for some reason I'm not getting my notifications. I'm a motivated seller - make me an offer.
