On a side note, have any of you guys heard of anyone wrapping the engine coolant reservoir in insulation before? I assume toyota did their homework but could wrapping it make it keep the heat in any better?

Do you have an engine monitor (e.g. ScanGauge) to show coolant and inverter temperatures? You don't want them, especially the electronics, to get too warm.
    Is this fire safe?

Im not sure if its fire safe or not.

I bought the Torque app for my Android phone and the bluetooth OBD2 connector is on its way.

Jimbo- I assume with your interest in electronics you are also following the other thread below regarding Arduino control of the coolant temps. It is in the Gen-II Modifications area.

No I havent seen that thread. I used to sell Toyota's, I thought I knew a lot about the Prius as well as their other models but priuschat has shown me that I have a lot to learn. I have spent days reading through many different topics. I guess I just missed that one.

Ive been trying to find a thread that lists nominal temperatures, pressures etc of a gen 2 prius.
Im really excited to get the Torque program up and running but honestly they are going to just be numbers if I dont know what temperatures to expect.

to satisfy the curiosity of some (including myself), here are some quick numbers from SG that i've recorded over the weekend when i used started the car without using the EBH.

    ambient temp: 21deg C
ICE run time: 1min 38 sec
    engine temp range: 22deg C to 50 deg C
    SOC: 50.5% to 53.5%
    fuel consumed: .06 liters
    fuel cost: .09 cents

    ambient temp: 25deg C
ICE run time: 1min 01 sec
    engine temp range: 35deg C to 50 deg C
    SOC: 60% to 61%
    fuel consumed: .03 liters
    fuel cost: .04 cents

if i had the EBH on for about an hour @400W, from an ambient temp of 21deg C,
which would approximately take the engine temp from 21 to 40deg C and skip stage 1a, i would be spending around $.09cents @ $.2145 per kWh.

So, in my neck of the woods, where it doesn't get colder than 10deg C, the cost comes out roughly the same. It's only up to the owner where to spend the money on -- gas or electricity. :)
