Need advice on used prius 2006

    Hi all-

    I'm looking at a 2006 Prius with Leather/Nav that has 95,000 miles. I am buying it from a friend's father and they take the car to the dealer for everything. I got the maintenance records from the Toyota and everything was pretty routine and consistently done at the dealer.

    Here are the notable things:
    33,000 Miles: Water Pump Replaced (Warranty)
    48,000 Miles: PADS AND ROTORS FRONT (OEM) Replaced, water pump (recall), Rust on Rear Drums
    66,00 Miles: auxillary battery replaced
    71,000 Miles: spark plugs
    85,000 Miles: Exhaust Pipe Gasket, Brake Drums Rear (CUSTOMER DECLINED)
    92,000 Miles: Replaced muffler and heatshield, Replaced Drive Belts and Serpentine Belt

    There were no accidents on the carfax and my friends family is very honest. The only issues withe car now is one of the JBL Speakers is dead and the headline has just blow and the tail light is out

    Is there anything major repair wise to expect in the near future?

    The asking price is $4000 for this car. I've noticed this to be a good price given the relatively low mileage on the vehicle.

    Would love anyone's thoughts and any suggestions.

    brakes, muffler and plugs are unusual, but they might have been taking him to the cleaners.
    might need a hybrid battery, might not. sounds like a good deal, all the best!(y)

    I totally see them getting taken to the cleaners. In fact, he told me that he should've said no to things.

    Hybrid Battery has a 15 year/150,000 warranty since we are in Mass, so I think it looks good to go!

    Oh i see, bummer. I don't know if that should change anything because it seems like the hybrid battery failing is something that people overworry about.

    certainly, it's a small percentage. best to be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.

    In preparing to purchase this car, the sellers suggested we take it to the dealer to have it checked out and split the cost. Can they test the hybrid battery and give some suggestion as to the life?

    no. they can test it to make sure it's okay, but longevity is always the unknown quantity. a cell can be good today, and bad tomorrow, just like in our bodies.

    What happens if this happens when you are driving cross country for example. Does it have to be fixed for you to even move on? Thx!

    it depends, sometimes (more often than not) you can keep driving. but it would be better to drive it to a repair shop rather than risk a breakdown in the middle of nowhere.

    as i said, it's a very small percentage, but the older they get, the higher the odds.

    Aren't the odds of the hybrid battery going out ranging from 1%-15% before 200,000 miles? Someone on another thread said 3% for 2007 and before (to a point I guess) and 1% for 2008 and later. Sounds like an extremely good deal, at least it would be for my area!

    What would carrying around a spare battery module do? Something you could bring to a local shop to fix? I plan to drive mostly in New England so I there is someone in a decent vicinity who works on hybrid cars.

    OP I think the price is right. I just bought an 08 touring (leather/JBL like yours) with 108k mi from a dealer for $7.3k with an extended 3 year/36k mi limited warranty. Clean title, one owner, detailed service records. Couple things that need work but the warranty will cover most of it. A couple paint issues too but I'm not in a rush to fix that.

    Anyway based on my experience I think you're getting a great deal on a great car. Make it last 5 years or more and you're way ahead of the rest of America.
