I really need some help making a decision regarding my 2005 Prius. I bought it new and have been the only owner. I live in the BC lower mainland so the weather has always been moderate. It has 310,000 km (193,000 miles). My driving is about 50/50 highway and city. I've always regularly maintained it and the only major replacement was a cat converter about 4 years ago. A few years ago, I switched to synthetic oil after reading discussions on this forum. As far as I can tell there is absolutely nothing wrong with the car.

I'm thinking about selling it and buying a new one. My husband and I are recently retired, and I'd like to get a car that could last until I no longer want to drive (my 80s).

My dilemma is the asking price for either trade-in or private. I've got it listed for $4888 Cdn right now and have had a nibble but nothing serious. Up here in Vancouver, other listings for Prius' in the 2005 - 2006 range are asking 5300 (2005 with 300,000 km) up to $10,000 Cdn for Prius' with around 120 - 150,000 km. (Personally I think that's a 'little' high.)

One dealer offered us $1000 Cdn which was a little insulting in my opinion. The car is running just fine. It is worth more than $1000. I get about 5.5 km/100 k on the highway cruising at 100 km/hr and 5.0 - 6.0 in the city depending on how cold it is, and how long the drive. In the fall I bought new tires (Michelen Defender) and had the rear brakes done.

Right now, if I was offered $3000 to $3500 Cdn as a trade-in I think I should take it. Opinions? Comments?

it's only worth what someone will pay for it. if the dealer is offering 1,000 and you're asking 4,800, why not try 3,900. or something?

Thanks, I was offered 3000 for it at a Toyota dealership and I decided to accept.
