    Hi

I've had my 2010 Prius for about 3 months. Bought from a private seller who had very little history on it. Today it broke down on me with lots of warning lights. There happen to be a mechanic right off the freeway that I took it into. He diagnosed it as the water pump.

I'm planning on replacing the water pump myself this weekend, along with new coolant and oil change.

The car is at 99k miles. Is there anything else I should do while I'm at it?

    Thanks

Yes. Took it for an inspection at the dealer when I purchased it. They did one recall at the time. It was an airbag clip, I think.

the maintenance schedule is in the owners manual. did you get two fobs? might be a good time to check the 12v health, especially since you don't know how old it is. they are very small and weak.

something you want to look into. if you lose it it can be a lot more expensive than buying a second one now.

If it broke down, which water pump was it (inverter or engine)? Did he give you the codes or any diagnostic information to support his claim:whistle:?

Since you’ll be doing the coolant (sounds like the mechanic said the engine side), I’d also look into doing the egr circuit;).

That’s a job you don’t want to wait too long to do and it is involves :(.

Just did the water pump and egr circuit on our 2010 with 180 k miles and it’s going strong :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Yeah, I saw the code. Also, the symptoms match what I've seen others post with the same issue. So I feel safe with that diagnosis.

The EGR is a fairly spendy part. Is it really worth replacing preemptively at this point?

The only thing bad that can happen is head gasket failure if no preemptive maintenance is taken.

Don’t buy a new cooler or valve;).

Buy a used one from the salvage yard and clean it:).

Just as good as new but at a fraction of the cost(y).
