Start with a full battery, connected to an EVSE capable of the maximum current of the PiP. [In this case, ClipperCreek 30 or 40A capable unit.] (Sitting in the car) turn on the AC with the remote and watch the display. I saw the charge power at - 1.1 kW. After the 10 mins of AC, it took another ?20 mins? for the battery charging to complete.

Outside temp was displayed as 80F, inside was set to 72F.

    Explanations?

Oddly, I'm looking for (more) facts, and less "thoughts". For instance, the AC can certainly "run off the battery".

From your observation, it seems like the AC ONLY runs off the battery, no? Since the car was plugged in n' all.. or am I missing something?

It sounds like your car was pluged in and total charged. Then leaving car plug-in you turned on the air conditioning, car used 10 minutes of battery charge. Then when you quit using the air conditioning, with the car still pluged in the car, then the car started charging again to top off the battery this took 20 minutes. Now the cars battery is total charged again ready for your use.
    Is this correct?
Now what is your question about the all electric air conditioning? It does total run off the big battery. (allways)
I am no expert on air conditiong but maybe some else will be able to answer your questions better than I can.

@reitred - Yes. The question is - why didn't the AC run off the power available from the EVSE? According to the manual, the charge power will be reduced to run the AC, this doesn't apply if the battery is fully charged?!?

Since the battery was already charged the EVSE was already off. So when you started the A/C the car will automatically default to the battery. The problem then becomes, the inherent weakness of the internal charger on the PiP which is only 2.7kWh. The A/C and the fans take a lot of the available EVSE supply and leaves not a lot to recharge the battery.

@drash the EVSE was still connected and available. After the 10 min AC cycle ended, battery charging started as normal. I guess no one else has seen this - it's a use case akin to an EV "preconditioning" the cabin before driving. The EV crowd does it because resistive heat is an electricity hog.

I've seen it too. It changes depending on ( probably a lot of things ) and how hot it is outside and how low you have cabin temp set.

This reduces the utility of remote AC. I'd like to start my trip w a cool car and a full battery.

yes, i don't recall reading about anyone here really making good use of the remote a/c. on the plus side, the car cools down really fast once you get going.

that is based on one observation you made while sitting in the car with the a/c running ?

o_O I tried it........Once. When it was really hot out last year, like 92, and pressed the magic button. It worked but it doesn't have very good range. Like maybe 100 yards in the open. So by the time I got to my car, meh. Haven't tried it since. I have window vents so it really doesn't get too warm inside.

It sure is nice if you have to sit in the car while it's charging in 90 degrees full sun.
swealtering passers by snear at you and the a/c blows in your face

good for the pack too for a couple of reasons - more about that later
