When I was in college I used to go for couple mile runs in the morning with a girl who functioned on one lung. In her case the other missing lung was a congenital defect, but she was a shining example of just how much extra lung capacity we are born with, and one lung in a young person with an otherwise healthy cardiovascular system does just great.

So you are absolutely right Justin -- don't sweat the lobectomy if it is effective cancer treatment.

All the best my friend. My heart aches when you post of setbacks, and I am sure I am one of many here who care dearly how you are doing. Keep up the good fight -- we have your back.

Well the results from the CT scan were not good....

The 8mm tumor that had disappeared back in July is back and now 11mm. The other possible tumor remains unchanged. We are not sure if the chemo just wasn't effective over the last 6 mo nths or if the drug we discontinued just prior to the July scan was the really effective one. So I'm back to one positive tumor and one possible tumor; both located in my upper left lung. The good news is no other tumors appeared in either the CT or PET scan.

    The silver lining.....

Because the tumor is back and larger, lung surgery is now an option! I met with the thorasic surgeon yesterday and he feels a upper lobectomy is the best course of action and all of my other surgeons agree. Since this is my best option for long term remission I am very excited to go under the knife again. This will be less of an open surgery but more than lathroscopic. I'll likely be in the hospital for a week again but I'm used to that and I shouldn't miss more than 2 weeks of work. :)

I know it sounds weird but I am very excited to have this done. The surgery will take place mid to late January.

Best of luck with the resection, it does seem promising considering the lack of any other new tumor development on the PET. Get the offending lesions out, hit the chemo again and cross those fingers! Get on with it..why are they waiting until Jan? Are you on any suppressive therapy until then?

Evan, the surgery is serious enough that he doesn't want me in there during the holidays as the service may not be as good. He is also booked until then. This all came about rather quickly. My PET scan was last Friday.

Even cooler is the fact this all started in early 2009 and I'm still here. I'm pulling for a 2013 Christmas now. :)

And hopefully several more after that one!

YOU CAN DO IT!! And yes, in the voice of the guy in the Adam Sandler movies....you know which one I'm talking about, but I can't for the life of me think of a name right now.

Bad news about the tumors! Hopeful news about the surgery. Best of luck! I'll be thinking of you. I don't know what else to say. I sure hope you can come out of this clean and healthy.

From what I know of F8L that's a risk I think he's willing to take, especially since he devotes his career to preventing the things that could cause it to happen.
