I mean, you get the PHEV so that you have the option of an efficient (but not world record breaking) MPG for road trips, and the ability to avoid gassing up often when driving around town. Unless you're doing long road trips every weekend, you're still coming out well ahead.

We did a trip in our first year of ownership, 1200km round trip, and put 10k km on the car in town. Even with that, we spent only $240 in gas for the *year*, and maybe 20$ a month of electricity to do that. Significantly better than our old 2003 matrix for the year. On that same road trip that would have been nearly 4 tanks of gas, which would have been close to 200$ or so for one trip alone. Let alone the gas all year round.

If you wanted super great gas efficiency there are better hybrids out there, like the less powerful gen 4 prius, or even the corolla hybrid. And if you wanted no gas, you'd have an EV. This car gets you the benefits of an EV much of the time with the flexibility of an efficient hybrid.

the added weight and drag coefficient is what's causing the wild swings in your mpg calculations. Not plugging-in every evening will drive your mpg down even further. You need a certain amount of energy to drag all your toys around.......

12 mpg unloaded. 12 mpg as pictured. Plenty of energy to drag toys :)

The gen2 would drop below 30mpg at 90mpg with two people and two dogs, and nothing on the exterior. That may have been on a slight downgrade. 37mpg seems good with your conditions. You've wrecked the important thing to the Prius for highway efficiency with all the outside cargo, aerodynamics.
