One is reminded of P.T. Barnum.

One way of judging the worth of an alternate energy source is to watch how big oil companies position themselves to take charge of it. BP "Beyond Petroleum" (give me a break), advertises their investment in solar power, although right now, that investment is about 1% of what they spend on advertising it. Nonetheless, if there is a breakthrough in the cost of making solar panels, BP is set to pounce on it.

The initial resistance to a new energy source will come from entrenched economic and academic interests, then be followed by a land rush to grab it all up should the new energy source prove valid and practical. About 10 years later, politicians will figure out someway to take credit for having sponsored and/or invented it.

Maybe someday you'll be able to recycle the car washwater by putting it in your tank.
