NEW fuel economy ratings for Prius

Well I'm having an 8 mile 22 minute commute with the Prius (used to be 18 with the Camry) and I feel that 55 combined is accurate and that 60mpg-city is optimistic and 51mpg-highway is pessimistic.

It's not the EPA's fault if people want to drive like there's no tomorrow. I actually enjoy being in my Prius.

I'm very surprised someone finds the 0-35 acceleration inadequate as that's were the Prius is at its best compared to conventional gasolines. I understand that elevation plays a role but it's still hard to accept that 0-35mph acceleration is poor.

If you had ever driven a Prius, and understood how they work, you would know that a Prius is very quick off the line, with massive amounts of torque instantly available from the electric traction motor.

Also, how come the acceleration is so slow? If I want, I can leave the green light first before other regular cars and SUV's by stepping on gas (I have tried this a couple of times, just to see). Again, wheelchairs travel on the road?

The road out of my subdivision inclines at one point and if I can make to 20 mph I can make it all the way to the stop light. Well the other day this kid pulls out in front of me on his bike because they like to race my Prius up the incline. Anyway I had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the little heathen. Fortunately there was an elderly couple out driving their golf cart around the neighborhood and they were able to push my Prius up to the stop light with their cart. I guess the couple recognized me because they always have to pass me in their cart when I drive up this incline.

Does anyone else have problems with the dogs in the neighborhood running out and biting the tires on your Prius? I think it's the clicking sound from the electric motor that must makes them crazy. They don't seem to do that with the other cars just my Prius. If that's not bad enough the other day I'm at the grocery store and I go to leave and the batteries dead. I had to pay this overweight person in the store 20 bucks to drive the store's electric riding shopping cart out to my car for a jump. The kids waiting in their dad's Ford F350 pick up were laughing hysterically and their lab who was fortunately chained to the tool box in the bed of their truck seemed like he hated my Prius as well. I could tell from the slobber flying out of his mouth as he barked at my car!!

That must be joking, no car is optimized at 80 mph. The prius is actually more efficient due to it's lower air drag, at any speed. If everyone would slow to 60 or less, it would be a better world.

For everyone else humorously exaggerating to make a bit of a point.

Bear in mind I'm use to driving a Chevy Avalanche, large pot holes are felt as slight bumps, passing another vehicle takes a few seconds, 0-60 is can be done gently or in a matter of seconds.

From the Chevy Avalanche to the Toyota Prius, I cannot describe the Prius as "massive amounts of torque instantly available" nor "very quick off the line"

Yes, I do own and drive a Prius. Except for what I consider not very quick off the line, I love how it rides and handles and not just for it's exceptional MPG.

People driving their electric wheel chairs at night in the road in South Carolina, it's absolutely true.

Depending on the model, the Avalanche is about 1-1.5 seconds quicker in the 1/mile and has trap speeds very similar to the Prius (within 2 - 5mph). The 60' time should be about .2-.3 seconds faster in the Avalanche as well (2.4 60' vs a 2.6 60'). So in essense, we are not talking about a huge gap in performance. Now had you been talking about a Trailblazer SS or a VHO ext.cab truck (SS Silverado) I could better accept your point.

MPG is a 1/x equation. 60->48MPG is meaningless and a lot less hit to the pocketbook than 22->20MPG.

Do the math; USAToday, CNN, and most people don't.

My last tank was 56.9 and that was mixed driving. I love to get behind a truck. No one gets ticked for me going slowly and the draft helps. :lol:

I think I deserve my money back. I cannot remember off-hand the last time my tank MPG was in the 40's.

 

Does that mean we will ALL be hypermilers, if we are all beating the EPA?

Our first tank was 48.1mpg average, mostly city driving. That's with 5 people and the a/c running.

Now I'm on the second tank and it's gone up a bit, to 52.1mpg. 48 is a pretty easy target to hit.

 

Call me anal or just chalk it up to my being an engineer, but I've kept track of my mileage on three cars since 1989. On all three, the mileage has consisted of some city street, some freeway (at 75-80 mph) and some two-lane country roads in mountainous areas (at 55-70 mph). For whatever it's worth, here are the results:

1) 1989 Mazda 626, 4-cylinder 5-speed manual: 32 mpg over 110,000 miles

2) 1999 Toyota Camry, 6-cylinder automatic: 26 mpg over 71,000 miles

3) 2007 Prius: 49.7 mpg over 3,214 miles

The last 1,300 miles on the Prius were on a tour of national and state parks in southern Utah and consisted of about 100 miles on freeways at about 75 mph, about 200 miles at relatively low speeds on city streets and within the parks, and about 1000 miles on two-lane mountain roads at speeds of 55, 60 or 65 mph. Over these 1300 miles, I averaged 52.5 mpg. That average was calculated by dividing the total miles by fuel added to the tank (I filled up immediately before leaving and upon returning from the trip). The indicated average mileage on the MFD screen was about 1 mpg more optimistic.

In my camry hybrid, I got over the old EPA estimates by a decent margin, and I'm an aggressive driver. While I think they've improved their mileage estimates for some cars, I think there's still a lot of room for improvement, and I think they're way off the mark with other cars, particularly the SUV's. They gave the '98 Pathfinder a new combined rating of 16 mpg. I was lucky to get 10 mpg when I had that car.
