The use of glasses with polarized lenses may be the key here. Many display screens have polarized filters, thus, when the lens and screen polarizations are not aligned, the screen appears dimmer or completely black.

 

That isn't quite right. 2012 to 2014 are Pre "Facelift" models, and all use the same Instrument cluster part number (verified on my Dealer's parts web site).

The 2015+ "Facelift" years get more complicated. There are two different Instrument clusters one with the "multi info display.", and one without the "multi info display":

for 2015/16:

83809-47120 Without multi info display. To 5/16.
83809-47230 With multi info display. To 5/16.​

After 5/16:

83809-47121 Without multi info display. From 5/16.
83809-47231 With multi info display. From 5/16.​

I would guess that the change in 5/16 has something to do with the new MFD introduced in 2017 (510057 became 510165 for 2017) I installed a 510057 in my 2013, and I have not noticed any obvious differences between the two units, other than the "multi info display" is supported by the 510165 MFD in the 2017.

I assume my 2017 has 83809-47231 With multi info display. If it was reasonably easy to do, and it would result in getting the "Hybrid System Indicator" and the "Instantaneous MPG" that I have in my 2013, I might do the swap. @Georgina Rudkus, What part number is your friend looking for? If I find one, I will pas the info on.

 

Yeah, I can barely see my iphone screen with polarizing glasses on. I flat-out won't wear sunglasses when driving. Did a few times, decades back, but my vision really seemed compromised; didn't like it.

 

Correction: 2014 Prius V has a different part number from all other years.: 83809-47021
