    Hello,
Just read the thread regarding drivers relying on/being distracted by all the driver safety features now available on new cars, including the Prius.
After spending time in automobile body shops over the years, I noticed there where almost always an unusually large number of Prius in the shops getting body repairs after collisions.
Of course the sheer volume of Prius on the roads around here could account for that. However, a large portion of those Prius always were so new they still had the temporary paper plates, because the owners had not received the permanent plates in the mail yet.
My gut feeling for this was the new owners where checking out all the interesting information to be found on the display...then BAM they run into something, usually another car.
This can't be proven because most people would not admit to the error, but when I mention this theory to other rational car people, there is usually agreement.
Just food for thought to new Prius owners, and soon to be owners.
    Peace

I'm new to having a fancy display in my Prius. My 2G didn't have a screen in it.

I love the HUD! It keeps me from getting distracted, and I can look at everything I need or want to see, from the Eco Monitor to the nav to everybody around me on the road.

I don't have a phone on, I find it too distracting, especially since it seems to be sporting to tailgate Prius* around here.

Those considering a new Prius might want to test drive one with a HUD and see if it works well for them

*Prius are Japanese. In Japanese, the singular and plural forms of a noun are the same. The counter preceding the word is what changes.

They had a promotional contest for people to decide what the plural of Prius should be. However the linguists may feel about it, the hive mind gave us Prii.

All that was before Boaty McBoatface.

I must say it's very weird saying Prii, almost freaky.

    Pre-eye. Isn't language fun?

Oh, @ChapmanF Boaty still lives in the form of a launchable, remote submersible. Makes you think of the masses come up with suggestions like that is it any wonder we get strange results from elections?

One of the most distracting "features" cannot be turned off! I had a most distracting 150 mile drive home from the dealer in my new Prius.
My main distraction was the radar cruise controller popups on the dash that cannot be turned off! I kept trying to keep an eye on the Hybrid System Indicator bit the popups made it almost useless and a very dangerous distraction.

For safety's sake we should be able to turn off those popups. We do not need to know every time it senses or stops sensing a vehicle ahead. If we need to know, we can change the display quickly & check.

IIRC there is an option to turn the pop up messages off, but there's no selection choice, it's either all or no messages.

Actually in the US you can only turn off the startup cruise control popups, not the most distracting ones :(
Perhaps the UK is more fortunate.

i would say the touch screen buttons are the biggest problem, because you can't find them with your fingers without looking. but that's true on most modern cars. i'd be surprised if prius were in more accidents than other models, but maybe we text and drive more.

If I get a text, my Gen 4 Prius reads it to me. No need to look away.

Our first car, an '81 Civic, had a manual choke*, and IIRC: a dial for fan speed, and a couple of sliders, one for vent mode, one for temp. No radio. That was it. All of it reachable without taking your eyes off the road, and easy to work.

    * Our next car, an Accord, had an "automatic" choke, that regularly and reliably stalled the car, at the first red light, coming out of our area. Also, and again IIRC, it had push-buttons for the various bent modes, instead of a slider, so you were forced to take your eyes off the road, look at little icons on buttons. Progress had begun.

All Prii had LCD screens starting from Gen 1.

Gen 3 could be had with the basic radio, yes an LCD still, but just a few lines high with monochrome text.
