Think of the avg mph as the work load or conditions the car was placed under and the avg miles as the duration of the conditions of the work load and avg mpg as the net result of the work for the duration of the test.

the answer to your reply would be this. i live 1/4 from the highway and i can reset my trip meter before getting on to said highway and our posted speed is 65mph in this area with far grade , set the speed to 66mph and drive 35 miles on a straight highway without stops and my avg speed is going be around 56 mph and my mpg will be around 54 mpg .. so yes i can go faster and get better mpg .. see my point

If your going to brag about mpg .. lets see the avg speed for the distant .

55 mpg's is awesome! I commute from Hollister to Santa Clara for 55 miles one way and am seeing between 54.8mpg's and 56. But I did hit 59 one day - *patting myself on the back* I only fill up every 6 days which is way better than my 5th gen Explorer.. 50 bucks every other day in that pig (no pun intended).... Its a fun game to try and make the mileage go up tho. Enjoying it. With that big ol' hill, its awesome that you still see 55mpg's!

Sorry if this is a nit pick, but just to comment on these two sentences:

One should get way more than 50 mpg at 33 mph.

Over 60 mph, it's very difficult to get 60 mpg without favorable wind and changes in elevation.

    Agree with melonprius.
Bob Wilson's graphs strongly suggest that a constant 25-30mph gives maximum mpg for level driving on a Gen III Prius. That maximum mpg is about 80 mpg at those speeds , IIRC. He achieved a 1000 miles on a tank of fuel in a Gen III in that fashion. The real-use data I have acquired so far for constant speed , level highway, and calm wind conditions test runs seem to bear out Mr. Wilson's graphs.
