Ok guys, so as my thread states i am new to owning Prii.
I recent purchased 2 Gen 3 2013 from Japan. brought them home and one is perfectly fine. the other however is giving me the Parking lock malfunction warning on my display, of course its in Japanese, however Google translate confirmed the error for me.
the Car is parked on a level surface, the car starts and goes into ready state very quickly, it allows me to change gear and drive no issue, however the warning remains on the display.
I also checked the battery which gives me 12.6v while off.
I have done research and found that the problem mostly pops up due to low battery but i don't think this may be my case.

    so guys any suggestions?

    Hello Clive, welcome.

I'm sure you've already searched and not found anything. And given that she is so new and passed inspection. What I would do is check the easy, dumb stuff first.
(LoL, you should hear the self afaceing jokes going in me brain)

Is there perhaps an imperfection in/on the physical shifter it self. (happened to me yrs back on another style of Toyota)

Perhaps removing and inspecting fuse? I've actually cleared problems this way when looking for causes.

I doubt either thought will do ya much good. This is just how I hunt these things down. Easiest to check first and some times ya get lucky.

I'm sure some one will come along better versed than I if it's not an easy to remedy speed bump of a problem.

    But again, welcome!
(some really gifted folks here. So am sure this will be no biggie, soon)

Danny i am willing to start any where and agree simple is best first. i am looking right now for a diagram showing what are the relays and fuses which control the P lock. but no luck yet.
also when you say imperfection on the shifter what are you referring to?

    welcome!
p lock can be a real bugger. make sure the doors and hatch close properly, and check the 12v with a good drain on it to make sure it isn't dropping too low when you fire her up.
you may need tech stream to read codes, and service manual to diagnose.

Bisco so I changed the battery with the other prius that's working fine and the same thing also the battery dis not give any issue in the other one after multiple starts and stops plus with everything I could find turned on. Radio lights a.c. etc.

Looking to try changing the relays and fuses but would like a diagram to male sure I am changing the right ones.

Just saw Cisco's post. Both my PRI were/are real sensitive at the hatchback. Sounds and feels shut but even a very slight encumbered closing and it thinks its not closed.

    Wrote this in answer to you hrs ago and forgot to post;

Just a piece or bit of shmutz (technical term) that blocks the mechanical shifter from properly setting in or completely arriving. In this case, fully depressed.

Really doubt it, but never know.

Danny dont mean to sound daft but when you say shifter what are you referring to, the gear selector, the Foot Brake (hand brake), brake peddle? i doubt you are referring to the latter of the two?

Just any shmutz in any control or actuator associated. (Sorry for the technical jargon)

It's rare but has happened to me, Clive.

LoL, Cive. Think I got ya beat on sounding daft.

"Shmutz" (sp) is any sort of debris, fuzz, or "stuff" in need of removal or cleaning.
    Loose translation and bad spelling.

Always good to rule the easy and can't be that stuff!

Dig your avatar, Clive. Really tranquil.

I'm a mod on a much different forum. Some new folks join and ya look at their avatars and nicknames and just know it's gonna be a drag. Actual hate groups and anti human, humans.
    Sorry for the off topic.

Any luck with Cisco's thought? Honestly, when I am stuck, I look or ask for "The bisco thunk"

Danny one of my main hobbies is aviculture.
With regards to bisco's idea I do think I will need to check the computer, but will try swapping the relays first with the working car. But If anyone has had this experience and knows a fix I can try I would be most appreciated.

Ok guys. here is an update

changed the relays with the prius that's not giving the issue and still no luck.

i did notice something a bit odd which may be the root of the problem. when i power off the prius which gives no issue the P on the gear indicator on the dash remains highlighted. however on the pirus which gives the issue it comes off right before the display comes off.

also on another note. which may give some insight, the guy i bought the car from changed the JDM head unit (deck) to a local Toyota Head unit from a Prado not sure if he may have inadvertently done something while making that change.

    anyone with ideas are welcome

after pulling the h/u, if you don't have any luck, you may need to read the codes with mini vci.
