New Prius owner with Questions

    Hello,
    I am the proud new owner of a 2008 Prius, picked it up over the weekend so haven't quite had it for a full week yet. I have had many questions come up during the week and have spent my fair share of time with my head buried in the owners manual. Even after all that though I still have a few questions...

    One thing I noticed on my way into work today was that my glove box light seems to stay on all the time. Is this normal? Seems odd that it would always be on.

    Next question I have is related to the bluetooth. Is there anyway to get caller ID information to display on the screen when you get an incoming call?

    Hacking / softmodding things doesn't scare me, and I've seen the EV mod and a few of the other popular ones here on the forum. But I haven't seen any mods relating to the bluetooth, and sadly I find it a bit lacking.

    I usually get the incoming phone number displayed on incoming calls, so it may have more to do with your carrier, the incoming caller's carrier, and your model of phone. There is no setting to turn caller ID info on or off. The most annoying feature is when you make or receive a call the screen switches to a useless phone screen, I don't believe this annoying feature can be turned off.

    Most people wait until their warranty is over before starting to mod their Prius, lest a problem occur and your dealership claims your mod has voided your warranty.

    At the top of most Gen II Prius forums (newbie, main, maintenance, audio/visual, technical, modification) are sticky permanent threads that you should read, letting you know what the main trouble spots are in a Prius (12V battery, etc), what to do when you have problems, what not to do (run out of gas, overfill gas tank, etc), and how to change certain settings (turn off seatbelt & reverse beep, etc)

    Which Washington is that, Right Coast or Left Coast?

    As to the glove box light, yes it stays on whenever the car is in ready.
    Whether it was planned as a cost saving or a weight saving measure,
    or even both, its hard to believe that something that small is meaningful.
    But there it is, and you have to believe that Mother Toyota has her reasons.

    Can't address your bluetooth questions.

    The EV mode switch is a mixed blessing. I installed one ~three years
    ago just to find out what all the hubbub was about. You have to be
    really disciplined to get any benefit from it, and at best it's a very
    small benefit. It's best use is as an ICE ON suppressor. There are times
    when you are stopped that the ICE wants to fire up. Switching into EV
    mode will keep the ICE from doing so. Any other use pretty much just
    leads to a depleted HV battery which has to be recharged, which means
    using/wasting gas.

    There are a bunch of esoteric conditions when this applies, and I won't
    deprive you of the fun of using the Search Function to find applicable
    threads if you want to persue this matter... :rolleyes:

    Bottom line is I doubt that you can recover the cost of an EV switch
    unless you go the complete DIY, parts from Radio Shack route.

    Yes, the glovebox light stays on. I thought it was only when the headlights are on.

    Thanks for all the replies everyone, seems like a very helpful forum you all have here. I checked this morning and sure enough the glove box light is on as soon as the headlights are, seems strange but not a big deal.

    Rokeby - I'm on the left coast
    cns - my carrier is AT&T and I have an Iphone, and yes I agree that main phone screen is pretty pathetic.


    And here are the two girls in question in my username, they love to run.... :D

    ok well hello again everyone, as I've had a bit more time with my prius now I'm still really liking it. I've had three fill ups in her now and I'm averaging right around 45mpg on my daily commute. I'm pretty happy with that, and as the weather gets better I should see that improve even more.

    Again I come back to the community with another question however. I've been looking at the lowering springs for the gen II and haven't been able to find a definitive answer as to what springs work on which models. I have an 08 Touring and it appears that the Eibach springs won't work with the touring. Is that correct? I really like the look of the drop that those springs produce over the B&G. Any clarification or direction on this would be much appreciated.
