We picked up our new Prius on Saturday. Gas consumption is way above expectations. We're finding every excuse imaginable to drive it!!

The wow factor on this car is about a 10. We couldn't be more pleased.

And my wife thinks she will be the primary driver. HA!

This was tongue in cheek. The mpg is fine - 45 mpg breaking it in. We're using too much gas because we're simply driving it too much.

Congrats! Glad to hear you guys are having so much fun with the Prius! It's a fun car to drive, and improving the mpg becomes like a game.

Realistic mpg is 40-46, intown and highway respectively. We average 40-43 intown and 43-46 highway. Many will claim otherwise, but for the average Prius driver this is real mpg. Check most recent Consumer Report of 34/47.:)

That is an awesome feeling I know but I would try to exercise some restraint as wasting gas just to drive around is not good for any of us or your wallet. :)

Good to hear you are enjoying the car and welcome. :)

The total miles is now at 300 and the mpg is 44+ so we're feeling pretty good about that. It should improve somewhat as the car gets broken in.

And yes, we're trying to curtail our driving. Snow came to Columbus yesterday so that dampens the enthusiasm somewhat.

I have a question. I do my own car maintenance for the most part. Is it important to use a genuine Toyota oil filter? I hesitate to ask this for fear of starting a religious war. If this is covered in some thread just let me know.

Great web site, BTW. All the advice and information is appreciated.

It is important to use a QUALITY oil filter. The Toyota filter is a quality filter. We've been using Bosch filters, because we can buy them locally (and we've not ordered a case of Toyota OEM filters yet).

Yup, lots of info on this site. Enjoy! :)

I use the mobil1 filter and mobil1 5w-30 oil in my car. Mobil1 is a quality filter. It cost about $10. I have read Fram filters are among the worst constructed.
