With an impact screwdriver, it was Mendel zero, screws one, last time for me. Still, I think I managed to clean it fairly competely, just working from both sides.

Always unfortunate to lose to a mechanical device:cool:.

The only thing you missed was it’s testong position and possibly packed the seat a bit more if you couldn’t wipe the area down;).

But your garage queen doesn’t pack the miles on, so it’ll be ok(y).

I carefully lifted the valve with a screw driver blade, cleaned where it seated. Agree though, it'd rather have got those screws loose, opened it up.

Was it a force thing? I’m not gentle when it comes to the impact screwdrivers use;).

Although the inverter water pump with an impact screwdriver did lead to drilling one out that was troublesome:cool:.

But at least it was the spent one(y).

Ok got a call back from Toyota after 3 days, they can't duplicate my problem and want me to pick up my car.

These warranty enhancements are worthless. I even gave them a video.

Anyways, I'm going to push the issue with the service manager

Good luck but not surprising .

They don’t do anything without proof though that they an see:(.

I had the local toyota up here not cop to cracking the valve cover on the 98 4runner and made me point out their mistake:mad:.

    Always worth a shot though(y).

Yeah maybe. Later on I had no problem busting loose Honda rotor "retainer screws", with the same impact driver. But by then I'd acquired a small sledge hammer, a nice one-hander size. I'll persevere if there's ever another foray into EGR.

Maybe get replacement screws in advance too. Then you're a little less nervous about wailing on them. I had replacement screws for the Honda rotors, and of course never needed them.

so If I'm reading this correctly - the knocking on cold start with my check engine light -(I'm sorry not super car savvy) could be a start into getting this fixed - our could my spark plugs just need to be replaced?? course I just had the recall work done at my local Toyota dealer and they said nothing about my check engine light or the knocking on startup.

Finally getting my car back from the dealer today, they had it for 15 days.

They never were able to duplicate the knocking noise on my engine. The service manager agreed to change the EGR valve without the code p0401 because the wording on the technical bulletin states code "MAY" appear. Before replacing the valve, they had to make sure I didn't have a blown head gasket before they did the repair (shop foreman insisted I may already have a blown gasket). They pulled my spark plugs and stuck some type of scope down to look at the cylinders, a check for coolant.

Ultimately the decision to replace it was my talk with the service manager and showing him my video again. The service writer had all the information but he didn't have the authority to make the repair without the code p0401. The service manager was the only person that was able to make it happen.

Is your EGR valve actually sticking? I read so many different threads -- sorry if I missed where that was confirmed. There are other causes of startup knock. Even without a blown head gasket.

I don't really know if my EGR valve is sticking, I just know there's a warranty enhancement that addresses the knocking by replacing the EGR valve. I'm willing to try anything they provide for free

Reprogram ecu? o_O Wonder what that's about.
I hope it clears that stutter finally.

I didn't know modified harness and reprogram ecu was part of the repair. But if it helps the car, I'm all for it
