Congratulations to the LGBT citizenry. I am only sorry it is taking so long to gain basic rights.

    Great news!

I can't believe it is even an issue. It is basic human rights and equality, in the land where all men are supposedly created equal, there is a lot of inequality...

Somewhat as an aside, I have always been gratified (and a little surprised) that my colleague physicians approach end-of-life questions and partner questions pretty much the same as I do, and it matters very little what their other politics might be. Of course there are not that many who are not progressives, but they exist.

This is such good news! :)

It is no longer a question of "If", but "When" marriage equality is nation-wide. :thumb:

Pers don't really care.. marriage is overrated anyways ;)

what is fascinating is the rhetorics and the amount of sweat and blood shed on both sides of this non-issue.

^^ These people suffer state sponsored discrimination and witholding of basic rights. If empathy does not work for you, at least make an effort not to be part of the problem.

Personally, I view marriage as a private ceremony and want all legal standing and rights afforded partnerships to be defined by civil union available to all; but that is not the case in the US, so the LGBT citizenry is quite right in demanding access to marriage.

It's not overrated when you are denied seeing your loved one dying in the hospital room because you are not married.

yeah.. the legal side causing problems.. inheritance, insurance, etc.

the point is if you feel so strongly about your soulmate, is some bureaucrat issued piece of paper gonna change it? What if it gets lost/burned/etc, does it mean that you won't feel the same way?

It doesn't matter what you feel when it comes to marriage. It matters what rights you are given as a person and as a couple. Rights are not feelings. A wife can despise her husband and yet still file joint taxes and accompany him into the operating room. The whole point of the fight is to allow those rights to be for everyone, not the feeling. Laws work on little pieces of paper.

Yiddish insults don't change reality. I guarantee you if the tables were reversed you would feel differently. At least more than half of the NY legislature has more common sense than you.

This is a big important step that should be celebrated. Still, I shake my head at how narrowly the bill passed, and at the attitudes of otherwise kind and intelligent people who would deny others their basic human rights.

Maybe it would help the conservative-minded to think that it'll be good for business. Imagine all the new weddings in Central Park and Niagara Falls! As far as I know, New York doesn't have a residence requirement to be married there, so people will be coming from all over the country. I predict this one ruling will have a noticeable effect on New York tourism revenue. ;)

Marriage rights given in one state that are not under the umbrella of federal law do not extend to other states.

Any guesses why the NYS senate republican majority allowed the vote ? The only answers I can come up with

    1. They found a way to vote 'no' while voting 'yes'
    2. Enough constituents that voted them into office demanded a floor vote, although not necessarily a yes vote. I can imagine independents taking that line. Apparently Rep Skelos gave a campaign pledge this last election to bring the issue to vote, although he personally promised to oppose equal marriage rights. That sounds like politicking to me.

Agree. I think many people who privately support it, publicly oppose it due to what they think is politically correct. Marriage is a crap shoot anyway - 50%+ end up in divorce, so by getting married you're practically setting yourself up for failure. To me it doesn't matter what you call it, marriage, civil unions or whatever, as long as legally recognized relationships are granted equal access to the same rights and benefits that married couples now enjoy on a national level. That should be the ultimate goal.

Meaning you could get married in New York, but it won't be legal when you get home? The law is such an nice person.

Even so, I imagine simply being able to have a wedding will be compelling for many.

Yep, that is what it means.

New York state is the only state in the US that has recognized same-sex marriages from Canada. The ruling was enacted in 2010 by then Governor Paterson by executive edict, based on court rulings that since NYS recognized heterosexual marriage from Cananda, the state was obliged to extend the same right to Canadian same-sex marriages.

Curious, eh ? Cheers to our northern neighbors.

If that's the case, then it's case of selective enforcement. If 1st cousins marry in Alabama, their marriage is recognized in most other states, even if it is snickered at.
