Newbie here looking to possibly purchasea prius

    make sure the head gasket is good, unless you already plan on dropping in a new used engine

    I was reading up on that since I've been eyeing 3rd Gens. How long can they go before causing an issue? How would I know besides coolant consumption? And if it's just a HG and not a warp issue with the head couldn't you replace the HG?

    they usually start around 100k, but some never do. no one knows why, but the egr is one suspect.

    a compression leak down test might show it, and you can replace the head gasket, if you're positive no other damage has occurred

    That's what I figured. No warnings so a car with an egr failure may be one to avoid since you can't really make sure until you've been driving it awhile that the HG is going. First thing I'll be doing regardless is full egr clean whether it has codes or not then lol
