    Hi there,

I am a few months into ownership of my 2012 Prius Two and have had no success finding the right accelerator position for an "arrow free" glide in Pulse and Glide. I am hoping that someone can give me some tips on ho to find the sweet spot, or perhaps tell me what I am doing wrong.

I drive the car in ECO mode routinely, and have tried switching this off but it doesn't seem to help. I use the Energy Monitor display, with the goal of gliding the car with the gas engine off, and no regeneration taking place. Rarely do I see all the arrows disappear, and when they do it is only for a fleeting moment.

I think I am doing the Pulse phase correctly, gently accelerating to a speed less than 42 mph. I lift my foot off the accelerator, and the gas engine shuts off. I then depress the accelerator slightly and hold it in position. I note that if I don't depress enough then regeneration takes place. Depressing the accelerator too much causes the electric motor to add power to the drive wheels. I don't seem to be able to find that in-between position where the car just coasts.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

    Roy

Stop trying to drive with now arrows. It doesn't work for the GenIII.

Switch to the HSI indicator and glide with the bar looking like this or make the bar totally disappear (best).

Pulse with the HSI looking like this or with the bar at the halfway mark (in the Eco ICE section) instead of the 3/4 mark like depicted below.

Just about. Halfway is right around 1500-1700rpm depending on the terrain and tires and weather. I strive for something between half and three quarter. That netted me almost 110mpg for a couple hours. There may be a better method but that was the best I found after reading Wayne's posts and trying it myself.

Isnt "no arrows" and "bar totally disappear" the same thing?

Sorta but you use different screens. The HSI display is not so fickle. The arrows screen is too sensitive. It is hard to totally stop using gas or electricity like in the GenII so this is the best you can do.

Ohh okay. I understand what youre trying to say now. Yeah its pretty difficult trying to get no arrows.

OP: if it helps at all, I realized no arrow isnt really when you have no bar. Its when you have the tiniest speck in EV where youll achieve no arrows.

Following is a copy of my post.
    ======
In Japan, we have been discussing how to pulse&glide on the 3G Prius.

Our conclusion is we don't have to be so sensitive for the zero amp gliding and a weak battery use is acceptable, therefore 0-25% zone on the HSI screen is acceptable.
Also, a slow acceleration is not good for the ICE efficiency, therefore 75-100% zone is recommended for pulsing.

Thanks, Ken. I would like to make clear that when I say 1/2 to 3/4 of the HSI bar, that is the lower segment of the same area you describe and is depicted in the picture I linked as well. I'm glad our friends in Japan agree on this method.

All of this is detailed on Hobbit's web page.

    "Weak battery use is acceptable".
This is good to know, thanks.... but what do you recommend for people living in very hot climates for the glide when having to use AC?
Personally I will never glide in the range you list above since it drains the battery. I have it so the bar is completely disappeared when using AC. If I use windows or no AC/windows rolled up I will use sometimes your method for the glide, but mostly bar disappeared.

I too try to have nothing during the glide. But I think his point is that it is probably acceptable to be in that range for small segments of time to avoid another small pulse or other traffic concerns.
I definitely agree with his pulse zone area. Personally I aim for the middle of that zone or even a little past middle.

Great discussion. I know these topics have been covered a ton but it is always good to bring them up again to possibly explore new ways to look at things or simply to help someone that is new that wasn't around the last time we talked about it.

Go into your display settings and input the cost per gallon.

Back to original topic. SO the best MPG would be obtained by full throttle to the speed you want then no throttle?
