    Hi all,

I just bought a 2010 Prius and was and after searching through the forum iI was expecting to be able to get up to around 70kph in ev mode.... But in my Prius the ICE cuts in at exactly 60kph and give me some message in Japanese.

I tried it under a number of different circumstances and even in ideal conditions with a full battery, fully warmed up ICE, light throttle, and slight down hill I can't get past 60pkh...

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Brendan

You can keep the vehicle in EV mode up to 25 MPH (40 KPH), but when using eco, normal, or power mode, you can use the electric motor only till about 41 MPH (65 KPH). However that depends on the terrain. I live in a hilly area so I'm constantly getting up to 50-60 MPH (80-95 KPH) Before the ICE has to work when on down hill slopes.

Welcome, Brendanh. Prius is not an EV car. The only thing EV mode is any good for, unless you have a plug in model, is moving it short distances without having to start the ICE and wait for it to warm up. EV is not for normal driving in the standard Prius like yours. It will cost you battery life in the long term and gas in the short term. If you want to be able to drive in EV mode on a regular basis, you need a PiP or a Prime.

    Hi Jerry,

I'm not so much wanting to drive in ev mode, it was just sort of like a test to see if I could gauge the general health of the battery..... Is it normal that I could only go up to 60 on the dot when lots are able to get to 65-70? Thanks

That's what I had read before I bought the prius.... But even on a down hill slope the minute I get to 60 it kicks in...... Even if I am not on the throttle... Is that normal?

I was wondering if it is an indicator of overall battery health.... Or perhaps as mine is a 2010 imported from Japan is there some kind of update that it has missed?

What EXACTLY lead you to believe that ?
I don't remember seeing any such claim on here......but that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't.

As others have said, it won't work that way.

Stop trying to run EV only. The ICE will only have to run longer to recharge the battery. That will kill any economy gain that you get.

Well it sounds like you have a Japanese spec car. It’s possible the Japanese specification has a lower limit than the US version and thus your 60km/h vs. our 70km/h limit.

Hi thanks, yes I understand that .... I'm not trying to run in ev mode..... If I wanted that I could have just bought a leaf (which was cheaper)

I'm more after what is the max speed that can be achieved in EV mode without the ICE firing up. Do you have anyideas?

Yeah that was what I was thinking after trying multiple scenarios and still getting only 60..... I haven't been able to find the Japanese specs to verify this though..... Perhaps I never will with learning Japanese haha

Hi I just did a search ''gen 3 max ev speed" and a number of post mentioned 42 or 46mph.... both of which are more than my 60kph I'm getting

i don't think it is a good battery health measure. look into dr prius or tech stream for testing the battery

The transition that occurs at 60 or 70 kph on downhills is only slightly related to EV.

    Sounds like OCD to me.
    Why do you CARE ???

P.S. The max EV speed with my C is about 5 MPH or less, not that it matters.

Maximum coasting speed with engine stopped.
