I just installed a junk yard motor into a Gen 3 Prius. While working on it, I removed the Hybrid Battery Safety Plug and disconnected the 12v negative battery terminal lead. When I finished, the 12v battery was below 6 volts so I had to jump and recharge it. Now, accessories and lights come on but the message about Hybrid Battery and Find a Safe Place to Park comes up. The previous motor failed when a connecting rod broke and I believe other systems were operating correctly. The internal combustion motor was the only part of the power train replaced but I have the rest of the power train from the donor car.

I'm wondering whether the hybrid battery could be without enough charge at this point and how to fix that if that is the problem.

you can find it on youtube, a lot of people never complete the third step, it's counterintuitive

can't do much with that until you read the codes

Why on earth would you disconnect the negative 12V and not the positive? That way you always keep a 12V potential on your car and when you ground anything there will be a current flowing.
Most likely the reason why the battery was below 6V when you reconnected it.

How would current flow to an unconnected battery terminal? Safety says you always disconnect the negative first and connect it last. That avoids fireworks if you accidentally touch the positive wire to the chassis.

The 12 volt battery definitely needs replacing. You can get unusual computer codes with a weak one.

Make sure you slide handle to safety plug to right after you cantilever it to left.

Your suggestion is dangerous from a safety perspective and has nothing to do with the battery condition after being disconnected 6 months. In any negative ground system, the negative should always be disconnected when doing major maintenance.

I disconnected the 12v battery again and reconnected. It still had the code when I started it again but after several short drives, it cleared up. Now, it runs fine with no visible trouble codes so I don't know whether it is permanently fixed. I'm thinking it is.
