Good article. Yet, despite this, the National Federation for the Blind prevailed and got the legislation enacted. This stuff is coming, no matter what any of us says, so we might as well contribute to the enactment is what i'm saying. There's a comment period and address listed in the link in my previous post. Let NHTSA and the DOT know concerns and comments. Legislation can also be repealed, so write your Senators and Congress-persons; they do read letters (or at least someone on the staff does..). But hey, I still love my PiP.
The frequency and loudness (of the warble) change with speed (of the 'c' anyways), so it's more than just a simple 12v noisemaker.
I think the Star Trek sounds is a good thing to have for warning blind people. And it might also be good for stopping a dog or cat that's going to dart out from between a couple of parked cars. I've heard of a few family pets and a few children being hurt or killed by slow moving cars, in residential driveways. What I would really like is a backup beeper for both of our cars. So many dog walkers are out this time of year. Backing out of the driveway can be a little hairy sometimes..
no b/u/c on the c? maybe they should have the noisemaker when in reverse only. i would be happier with that.
Cool, going to unplug this as soon as I can. In Japan, there is a button to turn this off (see at about 1:02) would be nice if that were the case in NA. I don't think unplugging this is an issue because the reality is; if you hit a pedestrian with your car you are in deep trouble regardless of whether it makes a noise or not. this low whine is not going to alert anyone, especially when you consider how many people walk and text at the same time. But, if we could program a sound to be played, I'd want the theme song to Knight Rider
Hasn't anyone heard of a horn? It may p-ss 'em off, but they will know you're there. I use it every time I back up at the grocery store, mall, airport parking...you get the idea. Prius is just quiet. Oooppps...another non-PIP owner posting in a PIP thread.
I disagree. The number of people on this post unplugging the noisemaker is proof enough that the noise is clearly audible. I have enough trouble in parking lots as it is getting people to move out of the way. There is no reason to make it more difficult. If I can alert that one person out there not texting on their phone while walking and paying attention to their surroundings, that's reason enough to keep the noisemaker. Just because the herd don't listen doesn't mean it's ineffective. I do own a PiP but this thread applies to all 2012 Prius. Hmmm, maybe it's should be moved to a forum for owners of 2012 Prius. It's only logical.
Did you really say that out loud? Yes, at times mentioned and as required, and they hear me better than that silly noise maker "nobody hears", and so many are disconnecting.
My wife and I joke sometimes about our military days. I suppose it would be relevant to our too-quiet Prii. I tell her to get out and be my back-up spotter. Or, I'll honk right before I back up and then again as I begin to go forward. Safety, safety, safety.
I'm trying to get an MP3 of Lehigh Valley #211 to play with my windows down sitting next to some A-hole with the huge ICE with little mufflers or any time I just want to play head games with bystanders. This is an Alco RS3m with an EMD 567b 1200hp 12 cylinder diesel in her. Turn your speakers up a ways, and imagine how much fun this would be compared to the lame little squeak as your Pip goes down the street... Oh, c'mon turn up the bass, ear buds can't hack it... Alesis Near Field Monitors minumum... Turn it up!
And risk the not-entirely-unreasonable return fire from a law enforcement officer who happens to be nearby. Don't think so!
How about that creepy sound from the 50's movies, you know the one...right before the monster attacks.
