Except in certain extraordinary circumstances, this wouldn’t be a practical option.

Unlike European automakers, Toyota doesn’t sell overseas-specification vehicles domestically (page in Japanese). Toyota vehicles built for sale in Japan, even those very similar to models offered in the U.S. and built in the same assembly plants, lack the safety and emissions certifications required by U.S. regulations for imported vehicles.

That whole right handed drive would be a pain to deal with too. You'd forget and Mrs b would be like, "I'm driving?".

I hope the Prime SE starts at $32k if it’s more I’ll look at the regular Prius or Honda CRV Sport

How much does it cost to ship a Prius across the Pacific Ocean these days? My back of a napkin calculation says $2500-3000 from Japan to L.A for a single car, although I'd expect economies of scale for a car manufacturer.

The ships Toyota uses now hold about 6500 cars apiece. Figure you spend a million over the three week-ish process of driving 6500 cars into it, parking them carefully, tying them down, fueling the ship, sailing it across the Pacific, and then unpacking and driving all those cars out of it.

That's still only $154 per car, just for perspective.

That video doesn't fill me with happy thoughts. I might end up looking at a regular Prius over a Prime if the prices and availability are that bad. I can stomach a $2k-$4k premium over the regular Prius(FWD Limited vs. XSE Premium - max options), but something in the neighborhood of $9k? That's too rich for my blood. I was hoping for $42k or less(hopefully less) for a maxed-out Prime including destination fees.

Guess we'll find out the real numbers in a month or so.

Ain't gonna happen, you won't even get freight insurance at 150 bucks a pop. I work with Dachser and Kuehne & Nagel regularly, importing my own containers from Asia.

At what about the last 20 years when it was cheaper or nearly equivalent to buy a Prius in the US?

(¥2.2 mil for a 2009 Prius S equivalent to a 2020 Prius II for US$22,000 or the Prius G Touring Selection at ¥3,270,000 vs. a Prius V ATP for $33,100?)
