On my second tank I used 9.1 gallons and went 465 miles, for an average of 51.1 MPG.

Over the 872 miles I've driven overall, I've averaged 45.9 MPG (used 19 gallons of gas so far).

Most likely the computer gave you a more accurate MPG than calculations based upon filling up the tank. This is because the pump will tend to give out about 3 gallons short of a full tank. So if the dealer knows how to fill up the tank to 11.9 gallons but you are only able to fill it to 8.9 gallons then it will appear that you burned up to 3 gallons of gas than you actually did.

When I got my Prius a month ago I was so excited after thinking my mpg was much higher than what the computer showed. And then I read about how it's difficult to fill up the tank to 100%. So now I pretty much pay attention to what the computer says.

:D Your a/c runs on electricity, so no effect on your milage should be noticed.

    Cheers BeeMc.

Probably a couple of factors. Do you guys have a "winter" fuel? In a lot of metro areas the gasoline dispensed at the pump contains up to 10% ethanol. Ethanol doesn't quite have the amount of energy per unit that pure gasoline does so you MPG will take a slight dip. Also, how would you characterize your driving routine. Do you have a long commute or a short one? With the temps down you'll notice reduced fuel efficiency until the engine warms up. If you have a short commute then you'll really notice the effect.

OK, in the month of November (we bought it November 5th?) we put 2700 miles on it and after the first tank we repeatedly got 45 (44.3-45.7)mpg by the car on the tank. Mind you, my wife (her car) drives 80-90mph usually so I don't think we'll ever be going for records vs others here. Having said that we are taking it on its first road trip (to Ramona) on Friday, so we'll see how that goes. In December I will try to get her to get receipts and write down mileages so we can participate better :D

I have a 04 Prius and filled up for the 23rd time in November. It was my most fuel efficient tank yet. My previous best was 70.7 mpg for over 500 miles. This most recent tank started in WY in late September with my wife and myself and our two mountain bikes inside with all our luggage from a month long trip we just finished through a dozen western and mid-western states. Then mostly I drove by myself on other trips, usually an hour each way, with little traffic, no mountains and no wind on warm days. I filled up as much as possible to just before I thought it would overflow. I keep tires 44/42. My data:

Distance on the tank: 532 mi.
    Gallons used: 7.042
    mpg: 75.55
    MFD: 71.3
overall 11391 mi/187.323 gallons equals lifetime mpg of 60.81
    lifetime MFD is 62.28 mpg

I am retired--yea--and thus do not have to drive to work. Thus I can drive for pleasure. I will probably take several months to fill this tank primarily due to current cold Colorado winter.

My current tank is at 174 miles and MFD showing 69.3 mpg.

Well there must be some way that's better than what I sometimes do, which is getting it all over my shoes. The other alternative not filling it clear up. It seems harder in winter because the fuel bladder doesn't expand right when it's cold. Maybe not a problem in FL? Anyway what I am trying now is to run the pump as slow as it will go, then when it clicks off I do that one more time, then quit. I end up about 2 gallons less than full but it doesn't spill on me and the car.

That's only if I go to WA to get my gas, here in OR we can't pump our own. That's a real mess because the kid at the gas station can't be trained. I usually end up with spilled gas or a half a tank.

*edit* I try never to miss a chance to whine about the fuel bladder.

Owner of a 05 prius with just under 5k miles on it. Summer was great pulling 450-500 miles per tank. Now in the last week in November and first week in December where the temps are consistantly low to mid 20's I am getting 230 miles per tank with a wind behind me. When I run the fuel down to the light blinking I can squeeze (off first click) about 7 gal. into the tank.....

I have called my dealer wondering if I have issues and they say if my area is running "Summer Fuel" this would impact how hard the engine has to run to keep the water hot.... /boggle

now I am not pissed at 230 mpt since it is still around 30ish mpg which is better than I was making with my F150 BUT somwhow in all my research and talking to the salesman I failed to find out about such a DRASTIC mpg change during the winter...

    Any thoughts?

Had my best tank avg mpg last time. Usually average 44-45. Lowest mpg was highway driving at about 80mph right under 40mpg. Currently only doing about 42.7mpg with this tank. :-(

    Tank Miles: 503
    Tank MPG: 48.3
    Avg Temp: 70s
    Price of Tank: $ 24.00
    Price per Gal: $2.32

    Avg Tank Mileage: 53.36
Avg Temperature: mainly 60s and 70s
    Avg Price per Gallon: 2.08

I've lost most of the receipts, but until the
cold hit Dallas, I was getting mileage in this range.
