Now, it's meat processors that are shutting down due to COVID 19

While some shortage may be looming at the retail end, a glut seems to be looming at the ranch end. Coming from a beef raising family, I've heard that sale prices are dropping.

This would be a similar story as the produce farmers, who are already plowing some of it under for lack of institutional market and/or harvest labor.
This could be more a rise of the self-producers, veggies and meats. So I hope those are very good-sized gardens, to feed both families

In which case, the wild Bambis could become quite scarce from heavy 2-legged predation. Poaching. You'd then have much better luck offering up to harvest some excess livestock that the meat producers would be unable to sell. No hunting skills needed.

Yer getting that news kinda late.

All of my friends that punch cows have been grumbling about sagging meat prices for years, and Vegan is a VERY popular four-letter-word now.

To be fair....farmers and ranchers always fuss about prices....and Vegans themselves are more responsible for their unpopularity than meat and dairy industry problems......but hey, never let a crisis go to waste.......right?

Whitetail deer are only scarce in the minds of people who do not get out of cities very much.
WE are now the apex predator, and wasting diseases and poachers do take their toll, but I'm thinking that the herd is safe for now....
    EXCEPT maybe from CARS.

When deer strikes stop being a major Prius-killer then I'll start worrying about herd conservation.

    Besides....
Bovines may be kinda hard to hunt in their natural environment......on a ranch or dairy farm in a state that allows citizens to arm themselves.

I was hearing of additional drops this month.
~30 million deer. 330 million people. If meat runs short, it wouldn't take long to decimate the deer populations near the cities.
95 million cattle, 75 million hogs, 240 million turkeys, 9 billion broiler chickens/year. Don't poach them, use part of that stimulus check to make an offer, because yes, many ranchers will shoot back at rustlers.

It really wouldn't have been that long ago that nobody would have been able to convince me that in 2020 drive-thrus would be the only kind of restaurant left, and that Burger King would be doing well with a meatless sandwich.

Drive thru Starbucks are shut down, up here. Most of the fast food take outs (drive through or pick up) are going strong though. Joy...

This encourages frequent "forays", and all it takes is ONE positive employee, especially a window cashier,to start the nuclear reaction.

Guess I'm fueling topic-drift. Here's what we've been gnawing on, for nearly a week now:

Canadian $'s. Translated, around 12 pounds, for $8.40~ USD.

We still have a quarter of grass-fed beef (all processed) purchased last year directly from a rancher. We bought a side of an animal, as a carcass, not as meat, since it did not get USDA inspections The price comes out to be supper affordable compared to stored bought grass-fed beef. We sometimes do the same for the pig, but we didn't buy one last year. I just called our local butcher to order a case of pork belly (about 50 lb from two pigs). He will have it in a few days. We are almost out of bacon. Time to smoke some bacon soon.

There are two or three local stores that are doing a thriving biz processing various animals and if you go by one in particular at 0630 or earlier you can sample.......er.....I'm "told."

Not that I PERSONALLY would do it.....

    Nope...

    Not me....

Should I take some solace in the fact that they are still using the terms "Warning" "Potentially" and not there yet but only "Perilously Close"?
I think we all just hope this doesn't expand as a problem or threat to the food supply.

My fear, is even if the threat doesn't manifests beyond warnings and potential, the warning in of itself will have people hoarding meat, thus a shortage becoming inevitable, even if remaining plants are still processing meats.
