Oh, I didn't realize that the U.S. military that's terrorizing Iraq is somehow protecting my rights.

Just Foreign Policy - Iraqi Death Estimate

    ^ Over a million dead.

But it's OK, because they're all "bad guys", right?

Seriously pal, lose the blind jingoism & see the reality of the situation.

Typical NRA supporter, as long as you can throw out a carrot that doesn't mean squat, they send in more money, NRA is just another pyramid scheme, with the only ones getting rich are the top of the ladder. NRA doesn't do anything except line the pockets of themselves and politicians.

This is like saying I love kittens but I have no problem chopping their heads off for monetary gain.

How well versed are you in the environmental sciences? This makes no sense to me as what you describe as caring flies in the face of the problems associated with fossil fuel usage. :(

    Striker,

Last I checked the recent military activity has not been geared towards protecting my rights and has not done so in quite some time. The implied threat of military violence could be construed as doing so but the actual actions of late have not secured my rights in any form that I am aware of. The line you used is a prefabricated line of BS that has been drilled into recruits heads from day 1 of service and cracks me up every time I hear it so I have no problem laughing in the face of the one who utters it. There are many countries around the world who have not had their rights stipped or their livelyhoods destroyed because their military forces were not prancing around the world asserting dominance Pax Americana style.

I could go on but your posting about hidding in trees and shooting people pretty much sums up your maturity level so I'll just stop here. :)

Several interesting points here. I received a PM from rep308 with a reference to Wikipedia about the term "cop killer bullets." Apparently the term is unjustified and I stand corrected on that point. Thanks, rep308.

However, the argument above that "once you make one kind illegal its easy to make all of it illegal" is fundamentally flawed, and leads the NRA to support people's "right" to own assault weapons and other military weaponry which nobody has any legitimate use for.

A fundamental change has taken place in America during my lifetime, and that is that Americans are more afraid. They are afraid of anyone they perceive as "outsiders" and they are afraid of each other. They are afraid of their neighbors and they think that the world and their own city are filled with people who are just out to get them. I think a root difference between liberals and conservatives is that conservatives perceive the world as made up of good guys ("us") and bad guys ("them") and they believe the "bad guys" will do whatever they can to hurt the "good guys" regardless of the cost to themselves. In this world view the "bad guys" are totally irrational and their only wish in life is to cause suffering to the "good guys." Liberals believe that all people are essentially the same, want the same things, and react to situations in the same way. In this world view, it is useful to try to understand the real motivations of your enemy, because you will probably find that he has legitimate grievances, and that if you are willing to understand those you will usually find that there are less destructive and less expensive and more productive ways of addressing your differences than by killing each other.

This difference in outlook is so fundamental that we end up talking past each other because we cannot agree on the basic assumptions for the dialog. The conservative appears to the liberal to be intoxicated with machismo, compensating for a small penis by driving a Hummer and toting a gun; while the liberal appears to the conservative to be naively appeasing the "evil doers" who would destroy us if given half a chance. The conversation degenerates into name-calling and nobody accomplishes anything.

As a pacifist I have a strong dislike of guns. So I find the NRA disgusting. All our guns, and all our fear, and all our cops and laws and courts have done nothing to reduce the crime rate. We are one of the most violent of societies in spite of (or perhaps because of) our precious "right to bear arms." Obviously, other folks will have other opinions.

I actually love kittens and don't want to chop their heads off. My opinion is what it is. It doesn't make sense to you perhaps but that's it. If it doesn't make sense to you then tell yourself I don't care about the environment, doesn't matter to me. I still don't like people who litter and do want to drill in ANWR.

Incrementalism is an established tactic of anti gun groups. My precious right to keep and bear arms(looking forward to Heller on this one) confirmed by the 2nd Amendment of the US constitution and the Commonweath of PAs while I am at it, is exactly that; precious.

It protects the other rights rather well, thank you.

Target shooting is a legitimate use, collecting is a legitimate use, using the most effective firearm I can afford to protect my family is a legitimate use.

There is no litmus test for a firearm as to its use. If I want one because its Monday, that should be enough. Are we to require this "use" provision for bibles?

How do you define an "assault weapon"? This term seems to be used to cover evil black guns that make antis nervous.

I do not take the responsibility I take when carrying a firearm lightly. I have taken several courses in safety and tactical use of firearms. I practice more than the average law enforcement officer. I am licensed to carry in 26 states and have a Federal Firearms License.

People like me are not the problem. We took the time to undergo legal scrutiny to the right to carry weapons. Criminals don't bother.

A criminal does not go throught a background check buying a firearm, they are not affected by magazine capacities, ballistic fingerprinting, AWBs, or gun free zones.

There are 20,000 gun laws on the books in the USA(I get a 500 page book of them from the ATF for my FFL). If you want to make a difference, PROSECUTE CRIMINALS; not licensed responsible citizens. If a person commits a gun crime, put them away for 10 years, minimum. There are ample laws on the books that should be enforced.

I do not expect you or anyone for that matter to like guns, but if you try to criminalize resposible gun owners, I have a problem with that.

IMO, Bibles are far more dangerous than any firearm.

But that's a whole other issue..

Folks have been killing one another over religion long before anyone came up with a gun.

A large number of Prius owners have conservative leanings. "Least cost, end use" (not least cost, first use) means you think and act long-term. "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" is the motto of those who try to use less and act long-term. Since several Prii have exceeded 400,000 mi, and the 2010 Prius will be a PHEV with more interior room, it appears Prius owners try to maximize their benefits while keeping costs and emissions to a minimum. As we enter Peak Oil (and Peak Water), Prius owners appear to be riding the forefront of the conservative, long-term thinking trend.

The problem I have with the NRA, is that they aren't really what the members think they are, they are part of the problem in Washington, not part of the solution, and in reality, they haven't really done much for gun ownership, yeah they claim victory here and there, but for the most part it didn't take the NRA to do it.

The NRA is simply a lobbying group, buying and selling our congresspeople, and every now and then, a situation is created to help justify the NRA members belief that they need to send in more money, otherwise they loose all their rights, and the NRA looses fancy houses, party and vacation money for them and their congresspeople. Its a money making venture with a steady income, as long as they can convince people to send in money.

The only purpose of a gun is to kill. Target practice only serves to make you better able to use the gun to kill more effectively. I do not dispute that in our legal system you have the right to kill animals and people under certain conditions. If I had my way that would not be the case.

The Bible, while it can be used to cause great pain and suffering, principally by promoting it as the inerrant word of a creator-being and then by glossing it to make it seem hostile to any number of normal human views, is not in and of itself harmful. Read as literature, which is what it is, it has great merit. It has poetry and adventure and pornography.

The Bible, unlike a gun, can be used for positive ends.

    As can a gun.

Guns have saved the public from more rap music than any religious text.

Seriously, firearms have put food on my table, kept you and I from speaking German, protected our right to have this conversation, overthrown oppressors, and protected people from scumbags.

Are they made to kill? For the most part, yes.

The bible does have its moments, and if you lived by most of it tenants you would be a good person, but I contend that more people have died in the name of the bible than the gun.

This is far afield from NRA stickers.

Thankfully, our Constitution protects our right to own both.

That said, my guns have put more meat on my table and keep my family safer than my Bible ever could.

Let me clarify: The Bible has been used to justify more evil behavior than probably anything else in the world. But in itself it's no more evil than any other literary work of fantasy. Religion is evil, and one of the world's major religious groups takes the Bible as its scripture. But if a really big and popular religion were to base its beliefs on a perverted reading of the collected works of Jane Austin, as Christianity bases itself on a perverted reading of the Bible, that could probably become just as vile and nasty an institution as is Christianity.

But none of that has anything to do with the Bible as such, which is merely a work of fantasy with some very good poetry, some very exciting action stories, and some very hot pornography.

no stickers on my prius, it's "tacky" imo

but i have no problem with bumper stickers, just again kind of "tacky" if you will imo.

Not a member of the NRA only because im to cheap to pay the dues. I own over 15 guns though...I guess you could call me gun crazy. Proud Ex military, and CCW holder, and a fair target marksman. Firearm's are just another hobby of mine

I think alot of people assume because one drives a prius they are "pussies" or left wing tree huggers, I say rubbish. It's just a nice looking car with 4 wheels that get's me from point A to B while saving a few bucks at the pump, and oh might actually help reduce some of my foot print.
