That's amazing, thanks for the explanations. Dealers must have a hard time keeping mechanics trained to work on these things it sounds like a very complicated system when it goes wrong

The charge door has a solenoid so it could be affected.

Actually, it's just a spring loaded pin under a rubber boot. Works just like the stereo cabinet doors that you push and they pop open but it activates a switch that monitors its position. So, yes, they can get gummy in cold weather, I suppose. But that would most likely lead to the door not popping open. The switch not knowing the door is closed might take some investigation of the visual variety.

What you say may be true if you're not in range of a key FOB. If a FOB is within range there is a definite "clunk" when you open/close the charging hatch. If that's not a solenoid it sure is doing a pretty good imitation of one.

Two separate things. The locking pin has the solenoid. The opener has the spring and is behind the "n" in "pin" in the picture below.

I was just addressing what it might be if it was not caused by the obviously low 12V battery. You're right that it really was probably the low 12V that was the culprit. Especially since @John roden hasn't reported any repeat events since charging his battery.

Glad you brought it back to the main issue.
