Ken, I agree it's an economical substitute for the camera even though I like the tech which goes along with the Prius. Your system is a little more sophisticated in that it speaks to you. I have cancelled the beep when shifting to reverse and have installed a two button system which when you reverse gives three beeps while it maps out the area behind you over an arc covering 135 to 225 degrees behind the vehicle, beeps slowly at six feet from an object then at four feet the beep becomes faster until within two feet when the beep is steady. It has already saved us a heck of a lot more than we paid for it.

The IG pin should be connected to 12V (same as the ACC pin).
    REV can be left disconnected
GND needs to be connected to the car ground wiring.
And inside the box, pin 6 (select line) of the CD4066 analog switch needs to be connected to ground since it's not activated via LAN connections in the case of Prius.

But it sounds like this doesn't really matter since you've got a color converter. Sounds like you get a better deal on that by living in France.
Here's the email I got back from http://www.converters.tv/ regarding converter #173:

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry we currently have exclusive agency for this product with PAC-AUDIO. Can you please contact with Mr Brett Riggs Ph 714-835-3022 who can offer to you.

    Kind Regards
    Steve

I already had some beeping system for reverse installed in my prius.
in europe it is an option you can buy.

I wanted the reverse video cam just for the technical challenge.

Sorry about this VCI sad exclusity; for the price they ask for, they could include real harness instead of the butchery they recommend (cutting wires & so on).
Maybe the guy wanting this king of gadget is ready to pay for installation + cam + converter around 2000 US$.
It reminds me of what you said about lexus converter....
about 08635-00020, the one I have doesnot contains any 4066, I shall have another rev. anyway I will continue my tests later.

    to all
the AGC of the cam is perfect. it works perfectly even in black night just with the lights of the car.(of course in this case the picture is BW).

DVD video + Back-up camera COMBO?

Great installation indeed. The Prius is catching up to the most luxurious, best-equipped, high-end vehicles in terms of accessories & features.

However, will this back-up camera installation create any conflict w/ Coastal Dave's upcoming DVD installation? I would like to have both DVD & back-up camera features on the same screen (not at the same time though).

Frenchie - looks like I had a mistake in the instructions. The ground wire I added to activate the 08635-28020 b&w converter is shown in the attached photo. I've revised the zipped-pdf instruction document at http://home.comcast.net/~brosnan1/backupcam.zip to show this as figure 3.5.

in this installation there are 2 parts:
    1) a camera.
    2) a converter and some cabling.
my camera uses japanese NTSC (difference with US NTSC is in managing colour).
the converter I use generates RGBS from composite video of any standard.
the MFD needs NTSC frequencies 60hz interlaced 525lines.
normally what I installed should work with the hardware of coastaletech but you dont need 2 converters...
Maybe it is better to wait for coastaletech ; anyway be careful if you buy the toyota camera and after you installl coastaletecth maybe the image from the cam will be black & white if the converter processes only US NTSC video.
So maybe you should use a cam from SAVV it seems to be an excellent product
If you want to know a bit more about video conversion I suggest :

I think it's something like the text below. Apparently you need to buy the Eclipse BEC104G camera (see http://www.rakuten.co.jp/caraudio/449847/474613/ ) , then this kit helps activate it when you go into reverse. Not clear whether it also converts NTSC to RGBS, but it likely at least switches between 2 RGBS sources the way the #173 you're using does.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    *BEC104G/ driving reverse gear kit*

    * Here are some recommendation points *

Due to it's ultra small size, the Eclipse backup camera is very popular.
Even as it comes it's inconspicuous, but with further embedding it's possible to have just the lens part exposed depending on the model.
With this kit, even back monitor products from other companies (with RCA connector inputs) can automatically be activated in reverse gear.

    1. Full kit:
    Camera + kit

    ECLIPSE/BEC104G
    Reverse gear kit wiring
    Installation instruction manual

34,650 Yen ; Yasuda electrical machinery and appliances ; Qty; Pick up

    2. Reverse gear kit single unit

If you already have a camera installed, you only need this kit.
    Installation instruction manual bundled.

9,450 Yen; Yasuda electrical machinery and appliances ;Qty; Pick up

    3. single unit kit /inexpensive edition

[This part is more mysterious] Because the manufacturing process of the bundled push button switch that comes with the BEC104G can have flaws, if you first to send us your kit we will upgrade it and send it back. (There will be a part conversion fee.)

7,350 Yen Yasuda electrical machinery and appliances Qty Pick Up

    Here is interesting part.
Navi interface in Japan is very similar to Eclipse but radio is made by Matushita.
Eclipse is also OEM manufacture. In Japan has intelligent parking assistance but not engineer by Eclipse. There is many different hardwear and software is working together. There is hard determine who makes what for Prius.

thank you speedracer for the info.
We know definitely that the japanese prius uses a cam with the option IPA (inteligent parking assist). So for other countries it is necessary to convert NTSC to RGBS and inject the video to the right place.
Could you ask to the guys of the shop more info about this product ? http://car-denso.net/shopping/bec10.html
pictures and installation guide would be fine to understand what this hardware is doing.

Question for "Frenchie". Does the Toyota Reverse camera that you are using give you a "reversed" image? So that looking at the screen, what is actually on the left side of the car is shown on the left side of the screen? Later, Harold

    Bingo 2.
I said some days ago that I will try to feed video in the toyota converter 08635-28020.
    Today I received 2 "display subwire" 08635-00010 , so I made a short experiment.
I used the white left connector of the converter for forwarding EVERYTHING from N3 of the nav_unit.
    Here is the result:
    1) no smoke
    2) the 9v for the cam is activated when reverse is active.
    3) the image from the cam comes up automatically when going to reverse.
    4) the image is black & white....

    5) I forgot to check in the diag screens if the cam is detected...

Anyway , the point is :
If you want an automatic reverse camera,
If you don't want to spend a lot of money on converter.
If you don't need color , this toyota converter works perfectly.

see some pictures in the attached pdf.
